Cindy McCain, wife of Sen. John McCain, is headed to the Republic of Georgia, where tensions between the government and Russia have sparked international concern and have become an issue on the presidential campaign trail. McCain announced to a group of fundraisers in Sacramento that his wife was headed to the country, but the campaign did not provide any details about the trip. McCain has been very aggressive in his condemnation of Russia's invasion of Georgia, and his campaign has been critical of Obama's more measured response when Russian tanks first pushed into the country. I know I should like Michelle Obama. But . . . I just don’t. I can’t! Because, every time I try, I’m snake-charmed back by the pearlised nail varnish and Mars Attacks! hair of the one, the only, the ultimate power cheerleader: Cindy McCain. It all came to a head the other week when the putative First Fembot bowled through London on her way back to America from Vietnam. (Clearly, heiresses don’t worry about their carbon footprint — just as long as it’s a diamond-studded, snake-skin-heeled stiletto mega-stomp.) With an Air Force One blow-dry and coral-pink lipstick, the former junior...

Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan announced Monday she is giving up her role as the "face" of the American anti-war movement. Sheehan, 49, of Vacaville, Calif., lost her 24-year-old son Casey in Iraq on April 4, 2004. She has since emerged as one of the most vocal and high-profile opponents of the war, drawing international attention nearly two years ago when she camped outside President Bush's Crawford, Texas ranch to protest the war. "I am going to take whatever I have left and go home. I am going to go home and be a mother to my surviving children and try...

Now up for debate is whether Sheehan marginalized herself with her left-wing politics, including her photo op with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez last January, or was dropped by the fickle media or was just unable to rebound from repeated attacks from conservatives. From Sheehan's perspective, it doesn't matter. She may be yesterday's water cooler buzz, but she says she takes sober satisfaction that the November election proved she was not the only one disgusted with the war in Iraq and what it is doing to the country.
