A coal executive is threatening to sue Congressman Ben Chandler over a recent campaign ad. Chandler is facing Republican Andy Barr in the November election. Executive Heath Lovell appeared in a Barr ad recently wearing a hardhat and miner's garb. In response, Chandler has been running an ad saying Lovell is not actually a coal miner. Lovell's attorneys sent Chandler a letter today asking that the campaign take down the ad. The letter also included certificates to show Lovell is a certified miner for underground and surface coal operations in the commonwealth. A spokesperson for Chandler did immediately not return...

Seven of Kentucky’s eight members of the congressional delegation signed the Americans for Tax Reform “no tax” pledge that they have found they now can’t get out of. U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler of Versailles, the only Democrat in that group to sign, now says signing that pledge that is monitored by Grover Norquist was one of the biggest mistakes of his congressional career. “I’m sorry I did that, too,” Chandler said just before the 6:00 of the interview video. “I thought I was doing it for one session. And he made a determination that you do it forever. And I...

BATON ROUGE, La. — A state lawmaker from central Louisiana has become the latest member of the Louisiana House to leave the Democratic Party for the GOP. Rep. Billy Chandler, of Dry Prong, announced his party switch Friday, adding another Republican to the House, which recently became a majority GOP chamber. Chandler says he's joined the Republican Party because the philosophy more closely matches his views and those of his constituents. He was elected in 2006 to the district representing parts of Grant, LaSalle, Rapides, and Winn parishes. The House has 53 Republicans, 46 Democrats, four independents and two vacancies....

Some question whether lawmaker trying Waters can be impartialBy Susan Crabtree - 11/08/10 05:00 AM ET A jury of her peers will decide whether Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) violated House ethics rules, but some are questioning the ability of at least one of the members to remain impartial. Rep. Ben Chandler (D-Ky.), who sits on the adjudicatory panel that will weigh the allegations against Waters late this month, won reelection by just 600 votes, according to The Associated Press. His opponent, Andy Barr, is refusing to concede and has asked for a recanvass. If Chandler wins, it would be by...

Mark Hemingway of the Washington Examiner reports that 52 members of Congress are clinging to campaign funds received from Rep. Charles Rangel’s National Leadership PAC during the 2008 election cycle. The total of outstanding funds is $378,000.From the Examiner: "It just shows how out of touch they are and certainly explains Congress' 11 percent approval rating," said Ken Boehm, chairman of the National Legal and Policy Center. "It's a case where greed trumps common sense and everybody knows that returning the money is the ethical thing to do." Hemingway reports that 27 members of Congress have parted with...

The eight members of the House Ethics Committee sit in judgment on Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY), but it is hard to see how at least two of them can be impartial when they have received campaign funds from Rangel’s National Leadership PAC. According to Federal Election Commission records, Rep. Ben Chandler (D-KY), in photo, received two contributions of $5,000 each during the 2004 election cycle, on 12/15/03 and 1/20/04. Rep. G. K. Butterfield (D-NC) received contributions of $1,000 and $2,000 during the 2004 cycle, on 6/29/04 and 7/13/04 respectively. A third member of the Ethics Committee, Rep. Peter Welch...

National Environment Puts Boucher, Chandler at Greater Risk By John McArdle, CQ-Roll Call As the national political environment continues to tilt toward Republicans, a growing number of Democrats are likely to face tough re-election fights this fall. Two of the latest examples are Democratic Reps. Rick Boucher (Va.) and Ben Chandler (Ky.), who are being targeted by national Republicans and face credible challengers in their respective conservative-leaning, coal country districts. To reflect the competitive nature of the battles both Democrats are expected to have this fall, CQPolitics is changing the race ratings in both Virginia’s 9th district and Kentucky’s 6th...

The folks at Esotouric are champions of the minutiae of L.A. literary history, and they've dug up some great stuff about the early days of Raymond Chandler. Chandler, who had been born in Illinois and brought up in England, came back to America in 1913. According to Judith Freeman's book "The Long Embrace: Raymond Chandler and the Woman He Loved," it was the return trip to the U.S. that would determine Chandler's fate -- on the steamship, he met a friendly couple, the Lloyds, who lived in Los Angeles. Which then became his destination. Once here, Warren Lloyd helped him...

I'm looking for an alternative to Outlook, for a computer that runs Vista. I was disappointed that the OpenOffice "main" suite doesn't include a calendar. Has anyone used Chandler? What are your opinions, for a computer running Vista? What alternatives do I have? I'm looking for calendar and contact manager, not e-mail (because I'm using Windows Mail for that purpose). Thanks.
