The driver who attacked police on the Champs-Élysées on Monday had a permit to carry arms, sources close to the case have admitted, despite the fact he was on France’s terror watchlist for having been radicalized. The French PM says it’s “not satisfactory”. Sources close to the probe said the man, named as Adam Djaziri in the French press had been on France’s security watchlist since 2015 over ties to “the radical Islamist movement”. But the suspect’s father told AFP that his son “had a registered weapon; he practiced shooting”. A source close to the case said the 31-year-old had...

The partner of a gay policeman gunned down by a jihadist on Paris’ Champs-Elysées avenue in April has married him posthumously, according to reports on Wednesday. Former president François Hollande and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo attended the wedding on Tuesday of the late Xavier Jugelé and Étienne Cardiles. Jugele, 37, was shot dead on April 20 while on duty on the famous Parisian avenue, three days before the first round of France’s presidential election. The law in France states that posthumous marriages are permitted when there are “significant grounds” and terror attacks fall into this category, according to the government’s...

Two policemen have been wounded in a shooting on the Champs Elysees in Paris, French media say. Some reports say the gunman who fired on them has been killed by police. The Champs Elysees has been sealed off. France goes to the polls on Sunday in the first round of the presidential election. There is no word on the identity of the gunman. Jihadism is a major issue in the vote after attacks claimed by so-called Islamic State.

The traditional New Year's Eve celebrations on the Champs-Elysees will be the first large assembly to be sanctioned in Paris since France's state of emergency started in November. Each year, hundreds of thousands of people gather on Paris's Champs-Elysees to celebrate the "Reveillon," as the French call December 31. But after a year that started with the Charlie Hebdo attacks and ended with the November 13 shooting and bomb attacks that killed 130 people, it was unclear whether New Year celebrations in Paris would go ahead as usual. France has been under a state of emergency since November 13, and...

Police in France are searching for the driver of a vehicle that tried to crash through a security barrier for the Tour de France, which ends in Paris later. The incident took place on the Champs-Elysees at about 08:00 local time, as the barriers were being put out. Officers opened fire on the car but the suspect drove away. The car was later found abandoned nearby. There is no suggestion of terrorism as a motive, according to the BBC's Paris correspondent Hugh Schofield. He says the car first hit a parked vehicle in the Place de la Concorde.

PARIS (AFP) – French farmers turned the Champs Elysees into a vast farm covered with plants, trees, flowers and livestock on Sunday to draw attention to the crisis hitting the country's agricultural sector. Dubbed Nature Capital, over a stretch of 1.2 kilometres (0.8 miles) from the Arc de Triomphe halfway to the Place de la Concorde, more than one hundred varieties of grain, fruit and vegetables dotted Paris' most famous avenue. Cows, pigs, goats and lambs were also out on the Champs, but in small numbers with a view to showcasing some of the famous breeds such as the enormously...
