PARIS - A curfew was set up yesterday at Le Raincy, a neighborhood in the eastern suburbs of Paris. The order was issued by the local conservative mayor, Eric Raoult. The prime minister, Dominique de Villepin, made clear on television that similar measures might soon be enforced on a broader scale. "Restoring public safety is our top priority," he said. After 11 days and nights of rioting, the country was coming close to a civil war. A map published in the afternoon by Le Monde showed that ethnic violence - the "French Intifada," as it is being referred to by...

VIENNA, Austria — The Vienna cemetery where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is believed to have once been buried will undergo partial restoration, cultural officials said Friday [August 19] as the city prepares for next year's celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the composer's birth. Although the memorial marking Mozart's traditional burial site at St. Marxer Cemetery remains in sound condition, hundreds of other tombstones and statues in the surrounding park have suffered centuries of neglect. Authorities plan to restore a few of those graves — at a cost of 260,000 euros($316,758) — and use knowledge gained from the task for further...

State cites lack of separate fund Secretary of State William F. Galvin has accused the Catholic Archdiocese of Boston of violating state law by failing to maintain a separate fund for upkeep of its cemeteries and diverting money from cemetery care to other church purposes. Galvin's securities division delivered a 33-page complaint yesterday to the Catholic Cemetery Association Inc., an entity the archdiocese uses to operate its cemeteries, accusing it of failing to ensure the perpetual care of its 22 Catholic graveyards. Galvin accuses the church of betraying its parishioners, who are told when they buy a plot that 10...

A Tribute to the French: Eleven thousand soldiers lay beneath the dirt and stone, all buried on a distant land so far away from home. For just a strip of dismal beach they paid a hero's price, to save a foreign nation they all made the sacrifice. And now the shores of Normandy are lined with blocks of white: Americans who didn't turn from someone else's plight. Eleven thousand reasons for the French to take our side, but in the moment of our need, they chose to run and hide. Chirac said every war means loss, perhaps for France that's...

Urban poor till cemetery plots HARARE - It is midday at the Mabvuku cemetery on the eastern outskirts of the Zimbabwean capital, Harare, and a funeral is in progress. A few metres away, groups of people are preparing patches of land for planting maize and sweet potatoes. Farming in cemeteries has been a lifeline for many Harare residents struggling to cope with the ongoing economic crisis and spiraling prices. Lucky Marime, one of the cemetery farmers, said it was common practice to grab unused council land for farming, which then remained "in the family" until the council claimed it...

On the hunt for grave sites By TRACY MOSS © 2004 THE NEWS-GAZETTE Published Online July 12, 2004 CLICK TO SEE PHOTO CATLIN – Stan Pentecost doesn't believe in ghosts, or UFOs, because he's the kind of guy who needs to see something to believe it. So, when he read that dowsing – using two rods to find underground water – could also be used to locate graves as well as determine the size and gender of the deceased, he had to try it. "I still can't explain it, but it works," said Pentecost, a member of the Illiana Genealogical...

Source: University Of Colorado At Boulder Date: 2003-10-08 Prehistoric Footpaths In Costa Rica Indicate Intimate Ties With Villages, Cemeteries New findings by the University of Colorado at Boulder indicate tiny footpaths traveled by Costa Rican people 1,500 years ago were precursors to wide, deep and ritualistic roadways 500 years later leading to and from cemeteries and villages. During the past two years, a team of graduate students, NASA archaeologists and remote sensing specialists led by Professor Payson Sheets spent much of their time mapping the small footpaths, many of which are invisible on the ground but visible by satellites. The...

Just how sick and twisted are the French? This much: A new poll in Le Monde shows that one third of the Frogs want genocidal Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein to defeat "les anglo-saxons,” and only one third felt they were on the same side as the coalition led by America and Britain. Some of the most corrupt of this corrupt people have desecrated the graves of American and British heroes of World War I and World War II who saved the cowardly Frenchies from Germany. At Etaples, where 11,000 Allied liberators from WWI are buried, French degenerates defiled the...

WESTFIELD — Local veterans and the Springfield Catholic Diocese must await an Appeals Court decision on freedom of speech and religion concerning the display of flags on veterans' graves at St. Mary's Cemetery. Both sides argued their case yesterday before Appeals Court Justice Rudolph Kass. Lawyers representing both groups expect a ruling soon. Local veteran Larry Black Wolf said yesterday that after returning to Westfield from the 30-minute proceedings in Boston he was optimistic that the veterans' rights will be upheld. The issue went before the court after the diocese appealed a preliminary injunction, issued last month by Hampden Superior...
