Skoltech researchers in collaboration with scientists from the Institute for Problems of Chemical Physics of RAS and the Ural Federal University have shown that high-capacity high-power batteries can be made from organic materials without using lithium or other rare elements. In addition, they demonstrated the impressive stability of cathode materials and record high energy density in fast charge/discharge potassium-based batteries. The results of their studies were published in the Journal of Materials Chemistry A, Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters, and Chemical Communications. ============================================================= Lithium-ion batteries are indispensable in our daily life: they are widely used for energy storage, in particular,...

A self-driving Uber car that struck and killed an Arizona woman was not able to recognize that pedestrians jaywalk, the National Traffic Safety Board revealed in documents released earlier this week. Elaine Herzberg, 49, died after she was hit in March 2018 by a Volvo SUV, which had an operator in the driver's seat and was traveling at about 40 miles per hour in autonomous mode at night in Tempe. The fatal accident came as a result of this automated Uber not having "the capability to classify an object as a pedestrian unless that object was near a crosswalk," one...

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation into the possibility that battery defects in Tesla vehicles may have caused the cars to burst into flames. The investigation will involve certain battery management system software updates in Model S and Model X vehicles made between 2012 and 2019 in response to an "alarming number of car fires that have occurred worldwide," according to a letter the agency sent to Al Prescott, Tesla's deputy general counsel, on Oct. 24. The alleged defects in question are "high-voltage battery fires that are not related to collision or impact damage to the...

Oct. 4 (UPI) -- A Colorado physicist is putting his scientific expertise to a practical purpose -- using a 3D printer to build a Lamborghini with his 11-year-old son. Erie resident Sterling Backus and his son, Xander, 11, started work on their full-size, working model of an Italian supercar -- specifically the Lamborghini Aventador -- when the boy asked his father if it was possible. "One day I said to him, hey can we build one of those?" Xander Backus told WCNC-TV. Sterling Backus said his background as a "gear head" has thus far been more helpful than his training...

"100-year-old's car restored as tribute to him and his late wife" When John Ball purchased a classic Ford Consul sedan from Vic Gamble in Wales, U.K., he didn’t just get a car, but also a story. Gamble told him bought it in 1960 while on vacation with his wife when their car broke down and that they went on to take trips in it for over half a century. After Elma died five years ago, Gamble frequently drove it to visit her grave. When he finally had to let it go in 2017, he unwittingly sold it to the right...

It’s common for communities to use zoning codes to exclude commercial and industrial uses from residential areas, but Sacramento County, California, seems extra-zealous about making sure that residents don’t try to operate auto repair businesses amid homes. While it concedes to residents the right to perform minor auto repairs on their own cars in their driveway or garage, it bans repairs or maintenance in any of the following circumstances...

Buying a new car is almost always a daunting task, with salespeople trying to sell that extra warranty or undercarriage rustproofing. And, to add insult to the process of buying a new car, federal bureaucrats regularly tack on rules that jack up prices for consumers. In fact, average prices for new cars are nearing $40,000. But, that staggering high amount may soon fall due to the Trump administration’s ambitious drive to roll back onerous rules. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is in the process of freezing, or at least slowing, Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for cars, unshackling vehicles...

Where are the FBI and the DOJ when they are most needed? Still out on the wild goose chase called Russian Collusion to bring a duly elected American president down There appears to be an active Hamas terrorist sitting among them, but don’t expect any worthwhile investigation by the Democrats and the 12 Republicans who voted against President Donald Trump’s National Emergency effort—by pretending that there is no emergency at the Southern border. Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar, sworn in to Congress on the Koran rather than the Holy Bible, and seemingly sworn to the Muslim Brotherhood-inspired Hamas has failed to...
