FR has changed the donation site and all monthly donors who wish to continue should re-input their information on the new site. Badjoe last ran the FR support monthlies September 20th. It is now October 21 so you are now out of danger of being hit twice in one month. : ) If you have not gone to the new site and re-entered your information your monthly has stopped. Now I know you don't want that to happen it, so please go HERE to re-up. The next Freepathon will come sooner and last longer if you don't do this now....
  • Residents pack up, leave Muslim village in [California] foothills

    Orange County Register | June 15, 2002 | Staff
Badger, California A Muslim village near this Sierra Nevada foothill community has been disbanded, with its residents leaving behind empty homes, a troubled charter school and about $470,000 in back taxes and penalties. Displayed at the deserted village of Baladullah, which means "City of God" in Arabic, on Thursday was a handwritten yard sale sign that read: "Everything must go." A woman running the yard sale, who did not want to be identified, would only say that everyone wasn't gone, but was "down the hill." The yard sale was near GateWay Academy, a charter school closed earlier this year after...

It doesn't get much better than this: Early evening on the restaurant patio, sunshine filtering through the leaves of the mimosa trees, big-chested chirping birds occasionally swooping down to snatch an invisible crumb from the ground, smiling food servers, excellent cocktails and appetizers, and wonderful Freeper friends gathering and talking and laughing. The cool breeze finally drove us inside, where warm good cheer kept us engaged for far longer than we had planned. This was a group of almost perfect strangers, joined by our love of country, our passion for liberty, and, of course, Free Republic. Attending the Freep Meet...

The Power of X How the Best Thing for Apple, for Users, and Even for Microsoft, Would Be an Intel Version of OS X Jon Shirley, the only CEO of Microsoft to be universally identified as a grown-up, told me during his last week at the helm that the best thing that had ever happened for Microsoft's language business was Borland International and its language business. Borland, under the wacky Philippe Kahn, gave Microsoft fits. Borland languages were often better than Microsoft's, and always cheaper. The result was that Microsoft, even though it continued to be the larger player in ...

KHOST, AFGHANISTAN - Inside the dimly lit tent, the three US intelligence officials made it abundantly clear they didn't want the ensuing discussion to go beyond the gray canvas flaps. One of the men ran his index finger across his throat to make the point that there could be etribution if the secret got out. "Let's be clear from the start, none of this goes beyond our base," he told Lutfullah Mashal, who has been my interpreter, colleague, and loyal confidante for the past five months while I've reported from both Afghanistan and Pakistan. Mr. Mashal is an Afghan, an ...

It's kind of comforting to know that even in these troubled times, some of our public officials are still capable of making us laugh. Consider, for example, their crackdown on Glenn McElroy and his turkeys. Maybe you saw this on the news. Glenn, 64, runs the Pick Your Part auto-salvage yards in Anaheim and various other California locations. As a promotional gimmick, Glenn bought 320 live, raised-for-the-table turkeys and announced plans to hand them out to customers. The idea was that customers could chase the turkeys around the salvage yards, and if they caught one--not a particularly difficult task, given ...

After 11 days of intensive investigation, a collective portrait has begun to emerge of the men who guided three planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and crashed a fourth in a field in Pennsylvania.

It is sketchy and incomplete, but its disparate pieces show a group of seemingly well-educated young men who slipped into the United States and settled into bland suburban lives while they gained just enough training as pilots to take control of a passenger jet in midair.
