  • The Imperial Supreme Court

“The Supreme Court has now decreed that it, rather than agencies staffed by individuals with deep subject matter expertise and answerable to presidential appointees, will be the final arbiter of the meaning of every statute passed by Congress.”

Well, yeah. It’s been awhile since my 9th grade Civics class, but as I remember, that’s -exactly- the way it’s supposed to work.

    This opinion piece defines “hubris”.

    What’s a carbon credit?

Short answer. You give me a pile of money. I give you a piece of paper promising to bury some carbon in a place that’s somewhere out of your sight. I might or might not do this, it’s really the piece of paper that’s important.

The paper gives you absolution from all the self-guilt and accusations of your friends for flying your private jet around the world and cruising on your million-dollar yacht.

It’s like an anti climate change talisman, for virtue signaling people with far too much money.

  • Last surviving Medal of Honor recipient from the Korean War lies in honor at US Capitol (Col. Ralph Puckett, Jr.)

    From Wikipedia:

    OFFICIAL CITATION

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, March 3rd, 1863, has awarded, in the name of Congress, the Medal of Honor to
FIRST LIEUTENANT RALPH PUCKETT, JR. UNITED STATES ARMY for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty.

First Lieutenant Ralph Puckett, Jr., distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty while serving as the commander 8th U.S. Army Ranger Company during the period of 25 November, 1950, through 26 November, 1950, in Korea.

As his unit commenced a daylight attack on Hill 205, the enemy directed mortar, machine gun, and small-arms fire against the advancing force. To obtain fire, First Lieutenant Puckett mounted the closest tank, exposing himself to the deadly enemy fire. Leaping from the tank, he shouted words of encouragement to his men and began to lead the Rangers in the attack.

Almost immediately, enemy fire threatened the success of the attack by pinning down one platoon. Leaving the safety of his position, with full knowledge of the danger, First Lieutenant Puckett intentionally ran across an open area three times to draw enemy fire, thereby allowing the Rangers to locate and destroy the enemy positions and to seize Hill 205.

During the night, the enemy launched a counterattack that lasted four hours. Over the course of the counterattack, the Rangers were inspired and motivated by the extraordinary leadership and courageous example exhibited by First Lieutenant Puckett. As a result, five human-wave attacks by a battalion-strength enemy — enemy element were repulsed.

During the first attack, First Lieutenant Puckett was wounded by grenade fragments, but refused evacuation and continually directed artillery support that decimated attacking enemy formations.

He repeatedly abandoned positions of relative safety to make his way from foxhole to foxhole, to check the company’s perimeter and to distribute ammunition amongst the Rangers.

When the enemy launched a sixth attack, it became clear to First Lieutenant Puckett that the position was untenable due to the unavailability of supporting artillery fire. During this attack, two enemy mortar rounds landed in his foxhole, inflicting grievous wounds, which limited his mobility.

Knowing his men were in a precarious situation, First Lieutenant Puckett commanded the Rangers to leave him behind and evacuate the area. Feeling a sense of duty to aid him, the Rangers refused the order and staged an effort to retrieve him from the foxhole while still under fire from the enemy.

Ultimately, the Rangers succeeded in retrieving First Lieutenant Puckett and they moved to the bottom of the hill, where First Lieutenant Puckett called for devastating artillery fire on the top of the enemy-controlled hill.

First Lieutenant Puckett’s extraordinary heroism and selflessness above and beyond the call of duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

I’d go with “Fixin’ to get ready”. Perfect description of a state of being where-
    1. You’re not ready.
    2. You’re not actively getting ready.
    3. But you are preparing to do something.

Fixin to get ready can take 2 minutes, two hours, two days, two weeks, or two years. It depends. But the timescale is usually on the shorter side.

Ditto. Good read. Don’t really remember the movie.

I watched “The Battle of the Bulge” once with my grandfather. He saw it “in technicolor, on the original screening” as he put it. Anyway, I asked him what he thought afterwards, and he said “No one looked cold enough”.

Good observation, sez me. Now I judge war movies on how hot/cold, wet, dirty, hungry, and generally miserable the characters look.

I think Band of Brothers was probably the best that Hollywood can do.

Bob Uecker (semi-famous catcher) once said that the easiest way to catch a knuckleball was to wait until it stopped rolling, then go pick it up. 😁

A good knuckleball just kind of flutters up to the plate. No specific movement. Got to be near impossible to hit, I’d think.

During the “heat wave” in July locally, it was 10 degrees warmer than normal for a week or so. Hot, but it’s July, imagine that. Media said we were all gonna die.

Last week, locally it was 10 degrees cooler than normal. Pretty pleasant, actually. Media? Crickets.

Meanwhile, Antarctica and the southern hemisphere is setting record lows for cold temps this year. How that can happen, and the media still claim that the temperature globally is setting record highs, is beyond me. Either the scientists don’t understand basic statistics, or they’re trusting that most of the public doesn’t.

A Big Mac - the worst thing I could quickly think of for you to eat - has 1010 mg of salt in it.

So- for people to eat 10g, or 10000mg, that’s the equivalent of 10 Big Macs, daily.

I won’t say that people probably eat too much salt, but these bureaucrats with an agenda, are utterly wrong, imo.

Not because Bill Maher is suddenly one of us, or because I agree with this particular riff…

But because he sets the tone for the left side, and probably reads their tea leaves better than most on the right. A riff like this says to me that “The times, they are a changin’.

And BTW, Disney plus was $10 a month and cable was $110. That’s $1500 a year for something we only kept mostly due to inertia. We would watch out of habit, that’s all. And usually, see the same things over and over.

$1500 in after tax dollars takes a lot of time to earn.

I discontinued Disney plus awhile back.

That wasn’t good enough, so I recently turned off cable. Now, mostly we watch reruns through my $20 one time purchase of a ROKU. 70s and 80s sitcoms are current favorites. It’s fun to watch what life was like when people were generally happy.

Wbill Jr recently had a chance to go to Disney. “No thank you, I’m not interested”. He’s a really smart kid.

I’m sure that our little bit won’t put Disney out of business….. but I get several email offers a day for discount hotels in Orlando that I never saw before all this wokeness sprung up. Guessing that there’s probably a correlation there.

And then there are those who will say that evidence of intelligence out there is that they have not contacted us...

I would argue that it’s extreme hubris to assume Alien races would WANT to contact us. For instance, you may be aware of the ants that live in the hill at the end of your driveway, but you don’t spend any time down there speaking to them.

However, if they become annoying enough, by say, moving into your kitchen, you eradicate them.

This is what I’d be concerned with.
