  • Question to homeschool advocates

    01/18/2002 2:20:59 PM PST · by Thoeting · 186 replies · 281+ views
I have a question to homeschool advocates. I teach English to students with learning disabilities in a small (500 students) middle school. I work mostly with 6th graders. These are students who are 11-12 years old. This September, we had 6 students enroll who were previously home-schooled. Each set is coming into the public school system for different reasons. In 2 families, the parents have split up and both parents must now work. The others either just wanted to try it, or were tired of home. or moved from a large city. Of the 6, 1 enrolled in the school's ...
  • Hypothetical question

Don't know, wish I could take credit
I have a moral question for you. This is an imaginary situation, but I think it is fun to decide what one would do. The situation: You are in the Middle East, and there is a huge flood in progress. Many homes have been lost, water supplies compromised and structures destroyed. Let's say that you're a photographer and getting still photos for a news service, traveling alone, looking for particularly poignant scenes. You come across Osama Bin Laden who has been swept away by the floodwaters. He is barely hanging on to a tree limb and is about to ...
  • Any advice for a knocked out tooth?

    10/04/2001 6:33:54 PM PDT · by Thoeting · 107 replies · 1,283+ views
I would love to have the advice of anyone out there familiar with knocked out teeth. I am simply worried sick about my 14 year old daughter who knocked out a front tooth and damaged two others. The tooth was out of her mouth for under 30 seconds and by accident I guess I was able to put it exactly in place. It was never moved after the accident, even by the dentist. The root was never touched in any way. We have an appointment with an endodontist on Monday, but as a mother, I would just like to sleep ...
  • Nightmare at Noon

Nightmare at Noon Stephen St.Vincent BenetThere are no trenches dug in the park, not yet. There are no soldiers falling out of the sky. It's a fine clear day in the park. It is bright and hot. The trees are in full, green, summer-heavy leaf. An airplane drones overhead, but no one's afraid. There's no reason to be afraid, in a fine big city That was not built for war. There is time and time. There was time in Norway and the thing fell. When they woke, they saw the planes with the black crosses. When they woke, they heard ...
  • How do I find out a how conservative my Representative is?

    07/25/2001 10:08:46 AM PDT · by Thoeting
Forgive me my ignorance, but where do I go to see a rating of how conservative a congressman is? My congressman is Frank Wolf, and I noticed he recently had a 0% rating from the ACLU (meaning that he voted with them 0% of the time). Umm, is that good? Thanks!
  • Update on my child and the brass casings used as a science project

Last night I posted a question as to whether or not you all thought my 5th grader would get in trouble for bringing in a musical instrument made for science class made out of brass casings. I STRONGLY stated to her that she was to take it in today, in a box, and it was not to be mentioned to anyone until the teacher had seen and okayed it. She being an obedient (and pretty bright child) did exactly as I asked. I'm not sure if I am shocked or pleased or relieved The teacher loved it and asked the ...
  • Can my child get in trouble for bringing gun casings to school?

    04/24/2001 5:25:58 PM PDT · by Thoeting
My 5th grader was assigned a project in which she had to create a musical instrument made from items around the house. She and her father are avid shooters (she is quite good and a member of the NRA for kids), so what is around our house most? Brass casings ready for reloads. So she made a wind instrument with about 8 of them (using all different sizes) to illustrate volume, frequency, pitch, etc. She made a pretty neat instrument too. So here's my question--can she get in trouble for bringing casings to school? I looked up in the school ...
