I left a bag of dog food in my old ranch truck once overnight and the next day all the rubber weatherstripping was gone from the closest window and the door was bloody outside where they had tried in vain to get to it. Very persistent.
A couple of years ago, the light was starting to fade pretty good, and the grandkids were hunting fossils on an outcropping near our ranch Road. My daughter-in-law was standing next to a ledge when I suddenly grabbed her and yelled her name and pulled her away. There was a rattlesnake coiled up about the height of her neck. it was dark enough that I didn’t really see the snake, but the pattern on its back jumped out at me. I didn’t even realize what I was doing, and it still shocks me because my eyesight is not that great.
BS. Ben Barnes is every bit the cheater and liar that Lyndon Johnson was. My father co-owned an airplane with him, and said he was the slimiest lowlife he had ever met. Barnes wanted to do business deals with him, but my dad refused to get involved in anything else with him. Never trusted him.
My family had a donkey years ago for protection of our goats. Dad shot him dead after catching him actually attacking them. i guess there’s a bad one every now and then.
We have two guard dogs now. Recently, a man in the area retired and with our permission, he walks our ranches at night, hunting coyotes and pigs. On about 5,000 acres, he has killed almost 50 coyotes in the past 5 months and 90 pigs. Our guard dogs are accustomed to his presence now and don’t bark when he’s there now. He likes to hunt and we buy his shells. it’s a win/win relationship.
I actually know someone in our area who died from taking aspirin on an empty stomach recently. It stuck to the wall of his stomach near a vessel or something and he bled to death internally. The guy was a veterinarian too so you would think he wouldn’t do that.
We had 71 days at 100 or above in 2011. In 1980 we had 42 days in a row at 100 degrees or above. I really don’t remember thinking much of it at the time. I guess getting older I just notice the heat more. It was 108 here yesterday, though, and I was surprised that it seemed a comfortable level when it cooled to 102.
