  • Robert Gates to be named Secretary of Defense

Here is the email sent out to us students at Texas A&M...

By the time you read this, the President of the United States will have
announced that he will nominate me to be the next Secretary of
Defense. I am deeply honored, but also deeply saddened.

As most of you know, almost two years ago I declined an opportunity to
become the first Director of National Intelligence. I did so
principally because of my love for Texas A&M and because much of the
program we had initiated to take A&M to a new level of excellence had
    only just started.

Today, two years later, all of the initiatives of greatest importance
are well underway and on an assured path to completion. The faculty
reinvestment program is on track and all 447 new positions should be
funded by next September. Work is underway or in planning for more
than $500 million in construction, some 90% of it on new academic
facilities. We have made significant progress in increasing the
diversity of our faculty and student body, and both the programs and
funding are in place to continue that important and on-going effort.
And many new initiatives are now underway or are already complete to
enhance both graduate and undergraduate education, including, above
all, the new University Studies degree program. The Corps is on the
right track in terms of growth and grades, and the Capital Campaign
will end next month having far exceeded our billion dollar goal.

Some of you may worry whether one or another of these efforts will
continue with my departure. You need to know that the progress we have
made has been a team endeavor, and the team will remain. A remarkable
faculty and a group of gifted administrators and staff who truly
deserve the credit for all that has been accomplished over the past
four-plus years will still be here -- above all, my strong right arm
for nearly four and a half years, the Executive Vice President and
    Provost, Dr. David Prior.

I apologize for surprising you with this momentous decision and
announcement, and for leaving as president before fulfilling my
commitment to serve Texas A&M for at least five years. I hope you will
understand the circumstances that made this necessary and that this
appointment comes nearly as much a surprise to me as to you.

I will have more to say to you before I leave (if I am confirmed by the
Senate). But I must tell you that while I chose Texas A&M over
returning to government almost two years ago, much has happened both
here and around the world since then. I love Texas A&M deeply, but I
love our country more and, like the many Aggies in uniform, I am
obligated to do my duty. And so I must go. I hope you have some idea
of how painful that is for me and how much I will miss you and this
    unique American institution.

At this point, I expect to remain as President of Texas A&M until
completion of the confirmation process and a Senate vote. I assure
you, you will hear more from me before my departure.

    Robert M. Gates
    President
    Texas A&M University

I just returned from the Ukraine, and I know what you mean about the feeling towards the Russians. By the way, the "3" ( I know that's just a three, but am not sure how to do Cyrillic in html) is a Russian letter right? If I learned one thing it's not to use Russian letters in the Ukraine. Let me know if I'm totally wrong here though...

Here in College Station, we haven't really seen any rain yet. However, my roommates family who live around Livingston apparently got a good storm. I think there may have to be some supplies delivered later. Hope everyone is OK.

As soon as I can leave today, I need to try and find some ice. However,at least now it looks like it will be more for keeping a beer or two cold instead of my entire freezer for a prolonged period. This town has gone a little crazy.

Looks like we might be in better shape now here in College Station. The latest maps have 6-12" of rain though, and power loss in isolated area.

At least it looks like the high 80s, low 90s for a day or two if that were to happen. If it lasts longer, I might have to visit the parents around Waco.

I just hope the electricity holds here in CS. We'll see, I just have to fill up some water jugs and I'm ready.

Also, there are buildings on campus that will have no problem with high winds. I figure if it gets bad, I have an office that I can go to.

It all depends on the amount of rain. Last time, 6 flooded up around Hearne, so if she's going to Waco she might want to head out before the rain stops. I think I'm gonna ride it out here.

As far as I know, there is still gas almost everywhere in College Station. The stores have all had a run on water, but there are still bottles to be found in town.

I'll be sticking it out here. At worst, I have an office on campus that I can go to. The school was nice enough to open up the garages on Friday for people's cars in case we have hail and flying debris.

Here in College Station, Blinn (the local junior college) has decided to close starting tomorrow at noon. The A&M website is going slow, so no word yet, except the the A&M vs TSU game is now tomorrow night at 7:30.

So, the big announcement comes in about 15 minutes... Will I have to go to class tomorrow here at A&M or not?

I live in College Station, about 200 miles or so away, and still listen to WBAP. I can catch it all the time whereas the Houston stations are static always.

Being an engineer from small-town Texas, I love how my accent and the place I grew up make me a "Hayseed" to some. This man has a petroleum engineering degree, but I'm sure the journalism degree this writer may or may not have, since I can't find info on her, was hard too.

Well, being here in good old College Station, I guess that means when I leave school today I get to see the protesters (about 5 or so) that feel every time a person is executed they should stand by the street with a sign telling me how wrong this is. If they want sympathy for this cold blooded killer I know of another college in Texas they could go to and get a great reception.

My hometown is near Waco, Texas, which is where he has been living for awhile now (its actually in China Springs, just west of Waco). He was forced out of his Michigan home due to black mold about this time last year. They are waiting to build a new home in Michigan. I guess I'm wondering if that might cause some kind of residency issue or not. I am a big fan of "Uncle Ted" and try to go to as many events of his as I can around here.

Sorry I didn't write this, it came from the University newspaper here at Texas A&M, The Battalion. The author's e-mail address is available through the link online. I would assume that if he printed this, there must be a backup documentation of some kind. My intent was to show that not all colleges/universities are as left-wing as one might think.
