I have a close friend who is now an RN in FLA. I asked her about this case a few days ago. During her training, (several years ago) she came into contact with Terri. My friend tells me that at that time Terri was not in a persistent vegetative state, did indeed speak (said "love you" to her mother and "help me" to staff) and at that time a nurse told my friend that Terri's husband had indeed said, "When is this bitch going to die."
I agree with your distinctions and would like to add that it appears from the article that his condition (having never recovered consciousness)is what people typically are referring to when they think of a persistent vegetative state. There also appears to be no dispute that he has little or no hope of improvement.
In contrast, Terri is conscious and responsive. Further, there is some dispute among medical professionals that her condition can be improved with therapy.
Looks to me like she decided to save the new baby's life. Abusive men tend to be MORE abusive when their wives are pregnant. Also, it would be typical if he was abusing the older children as well. Seems likely that she decided this one would have a better life than the others had.
