Portland Police officers dressed in riot gear patrolled the march, and worked to keep the opposing groups on opposite sides of the street despite several cases of "intermingling." Officers said they saw demonstrators with guns, improvised weapons, and defensive gear in the area, but no violence was reported. Police did, however, arrest one person wearing a pumpkin outfit for disorderly conduct. The person was later identified as a man named Luis Marquez. Officers say they found a collapsable baton on Marquez.

In my humble opinion, it appears as though Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri may be ready for the rubber gun squad. The good sheriff said Thursday that law abiding citizens exercising their Second Amendment rights will be "thrown down on the ground with a gun pointed at them — or worse."

But the fact is that weak health systems, not unprecedented virulence or a previously unknown mode of transmission, are to blame for Ebola’s rapid spread. Weak health systems are also to blame for the high case-fatality rates in the current pandemic, which is caused by the Zaire strain of the virus. The obverse of this fact – and it is a fact – is the welcome news that the spread of the disease can be stopped by linking better infection control (to protect the uninfected) to improved clinical care (to save the afflicted). An Ebola diagnosis need not be a...

According to a Romney aide not authorized to speak publicly about the event, the campaign followed its usual protocol for impromptu, on-the-road stops by candidates: A staffer was dispatched to the St. Vincent De Paul Society ahead of Ryan's visit Saturday morning and spoke with a woman in charge on site, who said that it would be fine for the congressman to stop by. The campaign did not contact Antal ahead of the visit. The woman on site told the Romney staffer that some of the volunteers had already left, but that most were happy to remain until Ryan arrived,...

In the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision upholding the constitutionality of Obamacare, the principal choice now facing Americans on November 6 will be whether to keep Obamacare or to repeal it. The question is a binary one, and the answer — expressed almost entirely through their presidential vote — will go a long way toward determining the future course of this great nation. Yes, the economy is extremely important; and, yes, Obamacare is hurting the economy. But the reason why this election is the most important since the Civil War is not because Mitt Romney would make a far...

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration will stop deporting and begin granting work permits to younger illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children and have since led law-abiding lives. The election-year initiative addresses a top priority of an influential Latino electorate that has been vocal in its opposition to administration deportation policies. The policy change, described to The Associated Press by two senior administration officials, will affect as many as 800,000 immigrants who have lived in fear of deportation. It also bypasses Congress and partially achieves the goals of the so-called DREAM Act, a long-sought but never enacted...

Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas made headlines last year when he came out and publicly revealed himself to be an illegal alien living and working in the United States. He has not been contacted by the government since making the announcement, which he argues was intended to make the point that illegal immigration is not being addressed. Well, Vargas is stirring the immigration pot again and is featured on the cover of the latest issue of Time Magazine along with 35 other illegal aliens – who all name themselves in the article and tell their stories, CBS News...

Brain abnormalities that make teenagers more likely to smoke cannabis have been identified for the first time by Australian scientists. Their study of more than 100 Melbourne teens also confirmed that cannabis harms the brain, adding weight to a raft of previous research on damage caused by long-term use of the drug. Researchers from Monash and Melbourne universities took high-tech images of the brains of 155 primary school students when they were 12. Four years later when they reached their milestone 16th birthday, the students were asked whether they had used cannabis. Of 121 who responded, 28 admitted to using...

The talk show host was interviewing US Representative Keith Ellison. See if you can determine the name of the host before you watch the video. Here’s what he said about Islam and Muslims: - The threat, potentially, from radicalized Muslims is a unique and greater threat (greater than right wing militias). It is the greatest threat. - The conflict between Islam and the West has been going on for 1000 years. - Islam is a culture in its medieval era. - It comes from the Koran, a hate-filled holy book which is taken very literally by its people. - They...
