Employers are allowed to require the COVID-19 vaccine, and can also legally provide incentives, including cash, to workers who get jabbed, according to updated guidance from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Companies must still provide reasonable accommodation for employees who are exempt from mandatory immunization under the Americans with Disabilities Act and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. The commission also stated that employer incentives must not be "coercive," but stopped short of providing examples of illegal offers. Some experts say there's enough legal gray area that a flurry of lawsuits could arise as companies start to bring their...

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Police Force (SPF) can obtain TraceTogether data for criminal investigations, said Minister of State for Home Affairs Desmond Tan in Parliament on Monday (Jan 4). The SPF is empowered under the Criminal Procedure Code to obtain any data, and that includes the TraceTogether data, said Mr Tan. "The Government is the custodian of the TT (TraceTogether) data submitted by the individuals and stringent measures are put in place to safeguard this personal data," added Mr Tan. "Examples of these measures include only allowing authorised officers to access the data, using such data only for authorised purposes and...

Computer giant IBM, which has a large presence in Research Triangle Park, is laying off an unspecified number of employees, the company said Friday. The company did not directly blame the economic downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic for the layoffs. Earlier this year, the company told analysts it was restructuring parts of its business, including its Global Technology Services division, in a move that could lead to savings of $2 billion. In April, IBM took a $900 million charge against its first-quarter earnings in relation to that restructuring. “IBM’s work in a highly competitive marketplace requires flexibility to constantly...

NEW YORK (AP) — In just over 100 days, Mike Bloomberg spent over $500 million of his own fortune in a quixotic bid for the presidency that collapsed in stunning fashion on Super Tuesday, when he won just one U.S. territory, American Samoa. By Wednesday morning, he quit the race and endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden, saying his continued presence in the rapidly shrinking field would make it harder for the party to defeat President Donald Trump in November, his ultimate priority. The businessman, worth an estimated $61 billion, pledged to keep spending to defeat Trump.

Feb 13 (Reuters) - Wells Fargo & Co is planning to eliminate about 700 workers in Manila, Philippines, and move a portion of these roles to India that already houses nearly 12,000 tech employees, the U.S. bank's spokesman said on Thursday. The eliminations of the staff was earlier reported by Bloomberg, which also said the lender is telling about 650 of its tech workers in the United States that they will be required to relocate to a bigger market to keep their jobs. The bank laid off more than 200 employees in its U.S. lending divisions in 2019, as it...

By Karen Lema, Martin Petty and Phil Stewart MANILA/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday announced the termination of a two-decade-old Visiting Forces Agreement with the United States (VFA), delivering on threats to downgrade an alliance important to U.S. interests. U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper called the decision "unfortunate" and said it would be a move in the wrong direction at a time when Washington and its allies were trying to press China to abide by "international rules of order" in Asia.
