A TEAM of lawyers led by a Harvard professor is preparing to sue the US Government and surviving businesses that profited from slavery. “We will be seeking more than just monetary compensation,” Charles Ogletree, leader of the Reparations Assessment Group, said. “We want a change in America. We want full recognition, and a remedy, of how slavery stigmatised, raped, murdered and exploited millions of Africans through no fault of their own.” The group includes Johnnie Cochran, who defended O.J. Simpson; Alexander Pires Jr, who won a $1 billion settlement for black farmers who claimed discrimination by the US Department of ...

Supreme Court Stops Fla. Recount The Associated Press The U.S. Supreme Court granted George W. Bush's request to stop ballot recounts in Florida on Saturday, and agreed to hear the Republican's appeal of a Florida court ruling that had resurrected the campaign of presidential rival Al Gore. By a vote of 5-4, the court agreed to stop counts that began Saturday morning.

This thing just gets interestinger and interestinger. A former Florida Chief Justice told MSNBC's Brian Williams that Judge Sauls was REMOVED from a court (removed from the bench) by the Florida Supreme Court for "conduct unbecoming". Anyone know the details of this? How does this influence tomorrows decision?

Bill Clinton says he would have been tempted to run for president again if the Constitution would have let him. And, he says, he would have won. ``Oh, I probably would have run again,'' Clinton tells Rolling Stone in an interview. Does he think he'd have been a three-time winner? ``Yes. I do. But it's hard to say, because it's entirely academic,'' Clinton said. He adds that as life expectancy rises, there may be a reason to change the 22nd Amendment, which limits presidents to two four-year terms. Maybe it should just limit presidents to two ``consecutive'' terms, Clinton suggests. ...

DATE: Sometime in the near future. PLACE: Everywhere in America Jon Q. enters his assigned Nutritional Partners Cooperative (formerly Safeway Stores), and takes a cart from the front of the store. He follows his usual route, starting to his right in the breads and bakery goods, and proceeds through the aisles of dry goods, canned fruits and vegetables, clothing, shoes, sporting goods, paint and hardware, dairy products, household products, greeting cards, pet foods, meats, fish, and fresh fruits and vegetables. He can't help thinking how much easier it is to do all of his shopping in one store, now that ...
  • Wisconsin Update?

What the latest on "irregularities" in the WISCONSIN returns? I understand the Republicans can "contest" the results from that state. Reportedly there are many questionable votes. And have you seen the Miami Herald report on felons voting in Palm Beach and Duval counties? It seems those two counties decided - on their own - to ignore a state requirement that voting lists be purged of felons and dead people. I'm shocked!

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) -- Former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was forced to cancel a speech Tuesday night when hundreds of rowdy protesters blocked the entrance to the Berkeley Community Theater. More than 2,000 people with tickets waited in vain to enter the theater as the noisy mob waved signs and howled slogans through bullhorns. The address was finally canceled at about 8:15 p.m. with organizers saying Netanyahu's safety could not be guaranteed. While Berkeley is known as the home of the Free Speech Movement, one person in the crowd said she didn't care. "I don't believe in free speech ...
  • Gore Should Concede!

    11/26/2000 10:18:20 PM PST · by sav95667
The 2000 election was close, very close. A few dimpled chads here or some absentee ballots there and the outcome could have been different. But it wasn’t, and George W. Bush was declared the winner of Florida’s electoral votes. Gore has been in politics long enough to know that one could “contest” nearly every election. In some elections dead people have been known to vote. Felons, non-citizens and even family pets have voted upon occasion. Some people have reportedly voted more than once, while others have to be paid to vote at all. I am not condoning such actions; I’m ...
  • Congress to Decide...which Congress??

    11/26/2000 7:23:25 PM PST · by sav95667
One of the side effects of Bush asking the Supreme Court to hear his case is to temporarily "abate" public opinion. While Americans might not accept a Florida Supreme court decision as the final work, they probably will accept a US Supreme Court decision. So, despite the strong show of support for Bush at various rallys yesterday and today, I suspect that most Americans are willing to wait until next Friday (or however long after that date it takes for a decsion to be rendered). This poses a tacticle problem for Bush...should he move forward although he has been "certified" ...
  • Justices Dust Off 1887 Stature

The U.S. Supreme Court argument next week over Florida's ballots will focus almost entirely on a federal law--apparently never used in the 113 years it has been on the books--that forbids states to decide presidential elections based on rules adopted after the voting. Instead, the justices said they would consider whether the Florida Supreme Court's decision to require that recount results be included in the state's vote totals violated the Electoral Count Act of 1887. That law requires that "any controversy or contest" concerning the naming of members of the electoral college must be decided based on "laws enacted prior ...

Can you believe it? The Gorstapo didn't like today's ruling from the gang of 7 (aka Florida Supreme Court)which refused to require Miami-Dade to recount. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the same bunch that tossed up that knucleball of a decision yesterday that the Gorstapo loved. They called it reasonable, fair, just, etc. Today they didn't get their way so they had a Gorepasm. I'm beginning to wonder if Shakespeare wasn't right!

Read Chris Ruddy's NewsMax.com advise to George W. (Clearly it was written BEFORE Miami-Dade made their starting decision) Kudos also to Bush, who did hold a press confrence this morning and has made his feeling clear. For too long the Republicans have played by the rules. They have lost nearly every time. Hell, we are the majority party in Congress (both the House and Senate STILL), in the number of governorships, and, in my opinion, the true hearts and minds of most Americans. It's time we started to act like it. I certainly am NOT suggesting we follow Clinton/Gore tactics, ...

Racicot - YES - GORinch - NO. His news conference was very well done...keep up the pressure. Do not let Algore steal this election. I heard a "pundit" on MSNBC ask a recount observer if the reported stacking of Bush votes in Gore stacks was intentional or just human error. Duh! That's why we use voting machines, and why we CAN NOT allow this hand count to be validated.
