  • What is so ‘un-black’ about being intelligent?

I am not sure that is a uniquely black problem, I vaguely remember similar problems when I went to HS some 30 years ago.

Yeah, I was razzed for being smart back in high school (1970's). It appears the problem is much more pervasive in the black "community", though. Not being black myself I have to admit basing this on what I have read rather than personal experience.

The big difference is there was never any question of my doing well in school from my parents - I was expected to without making a big deal about it. In addition, there were plenty of other smart kids around, I was hardly unique. Many black kids do not seem to have those advantages. Unfortunately these are not advantages that can be legislated or mandated, they have to come from within.

Big deal. Like others have said, there have already been plenty of stations geared towards black listeners. If there's a market there, go for it, as long as they don't ask for the government to subsidize it.

  • A Contrary View (Did the Senate Repubs Really Do A Good Thing?)

There was a whole load of hand-wringing here on FR yesterday after this Senate action. I didn't get it then, and I still won't get it if people continue that way today after looking at the big picture.

I agree with you, the amount of weeping and gnashing of teeth both in here and from conservative writers seems out of proportion to what is happening. To me it looks like the resolution restates what has already been the policy all along, and says we have to get quarterly reports. Big deal.

I think many people are more worried that this will be perceived as the Senate attacking Bush. In a way, the responses in here and from conservaive columnists may actually perpetuate that view and hurt Bush more.

  • Northwest Mechanics to Vote on New Offer

AMFA's leaders rejected a Northwest offer Aug. 19 that would have preserved 2,750 mechanics jobs and pay up to 26 weeks of severance for 1,350 mechanics, cleaners and custodians targeted for layoffs. In September, negotiators rejected a proposal that would have kept 1,080 mechanics jobs and pay up to 16 weeks of severance for those laid off.

Well, that went well, you'd think AMFA would notice a trend.

  • Do you think it's time to reverse Roe v. Wade? [FR Straw Poll]

Yes, the decision should properly revert to the states. Roe v Wade was an overreach by the Federal court.

This is a far different question than asking if abortion should be illegal though. If Roe is overturned I expect many if not most states will continue things pretty much as they are, and we would have to deal with the implications of that.

  • Dean, possibly confusing Presidents, accuses Bush of playing "hide the salami" with Miers?

    1. We were using the term as a euphemism for plain old sex way back in college in the 70's, although I supposed it could be used for gay sex, too.

    2. Accusing Bush and Miers for playing hide the salami - can't Dean stop the politics of personal destruction? Can't we all just move on? What's with those sexually repressed prudish Democrats anyway?

Why is the WH Press secretary even being asked about what some talk show host said?

Exactly. Why should we care either? The guy's a freaking talk show host, if you don't like what he says don't listen to him (as Mhking is doing).

What's behind this is that the left considers Bennett a right-wing monolith that we all take our marching orders from, a la Rush Limbaugh. That's why they made such a big deal about the gambling. Most days I don't even think about Bennett, and I plan to stay that way.

  • Anti-war mom says N.Y. cops roughed her up

Sheehan, the grieving mother whose vigil near President Bush’s Texas ranch sparked anti-war protests around the country, said wasn’t roughed up by police, but was jostled when officers broke up the rally and arrested organizer Paul Zulkowitz.

Ok, why is the headline saying Sheehan was roughed up when she appears to be quoted saying she was not roughed up?

  • Patients getting runaround with legitimate Oxy Rx

If I was a doc, I wouldn't prescribe it to anyone who just walked in off the street claiming pain (and an oxy prescription) either.

Interesting you say that. There are some states where docs have been disciplined for NOT prescribing it to people who walked in off the street and requested a refill. This was during a big pain control initiative a few years ago. The docs were disciplined by the state medical boards for not prescribing meds the patient had reported were safe and effective. The "correct" thing to do is prescribe a small amount until you can get old records.

So in a way it's darned if you do, darned if you don't, ie docs can be disciplined for either not prescribing the med at all or prescribing it inappropriately.

Should doctors with the opposite experinece be denied the option to prescribe it?

Of course not, I was just trying to explain why I and presumably some other docs are so hesitant to prescribe it.

I'm a primary care doc, and used to prescribe Oxycontin a lot but now rarely do due to the risk of abuse. Everybody here has made good points and there is truth in all of them, but the bottom line for me is the number of patients abusing the meds was larger than the number using them properly. Not just by the patients for that matter, OxyContin was getting stolen all the time from patients as well. I sure as hell wasn't prescribing it for tennis sprains either as one poster suggests.

None of this excuses your puking up the race card on a public forum like this. This is exactly the sort of nonsense the leftists have been throwing at The President, and for which some of us have been vigorously condemning them.

Well said. While Blanco is probably incompetent, it does conservatives no good to wallow around in the mud using Jesse Jackson-type histrionics.

  • JAMA Gets Angry E-Mails From Abortion Foes

Instead this is what is called a "meta-analysis," a notorious scientific euphemism that means "BULLSH*T," among the medical community.

As a fellow member of the medical community and as one who receives JAMA, a well-done meta-analysis is not bullsh*t as you say, although it is heavily dependent on the studies within it to be well-controlled. I haven't read this article yet so it's hard for me to say one way or the other.

The editor of JAMA has one responsibility, which is to publish accurate and reliable research. If the study is accurate it should be published whether it supports one view or another. Most of the comments so far seem knee-jerk rather than trying to see if the study is reliable, and if it is reliable then how would we handle that information.

The uproar at FSU is that the Seminole Tribe approves of its use as mascots. I think the chairman of the Seminole Nation should attend the next FSU football game and allow the fans to put a collar and leash around his neck and lead him around the 50-yard line at halftime.

Umm, this is just a bit different than choosing the tribal name to represent a team that you are presumably proud of.
