WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House on Friday criticized former Education Secretary William Bennett for remarks linking the crime rate and the abortion of black babies. "The president believes the comments were not appropriate," White House press secretary Scott McClellan said.
Bennett, on his radio show, "Morning in America," was answering a caller's question when he took issue with the hypothesis put forth in a recent book that one reason crime is down is that abortion is up.
"But I do know that it's true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could, if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down," said Bennett, author of "The Book of Virtues."
He went on to call that "an impossible, ridiculous and morally reprehensible thing to do, but your crime rate would go down. So these far-out, these far-reaching, extensive extrapolations are, I think, tricky."
Responding later to criticism, Bennett said his comments had been mischaracterized and that his point was that the idea of supporting abortion to reduce crime was "morally reprehensible."
Bennett was education secretary under President Reagan and director of drug control policy when Bush's father was president.
The libs need to slow down with the "outrages"...people don't have a chance for an outrage to sink in before they come out with another.
The Rats not only support the idea, they have implemented it!
Agreed. People are already suffering from outrage fatigue.
The criminally complicit AP...don't waste your time.
What is wrong with what he said? I of course don't believe in forced abortions, but let us use logic. If blacks are 12% of the population and 50% of the prision population, and commit most violent crimes, then without blacks it would be lower. HOWEVER, William Bennett pointed out that this would be immoral. I don't like Bill Bennertt, he is another big government faux conservative, but people this is not racism. It just isn't pc.
The left would be proud of this.
I think the President was wrong to repudiate btw. That is why I posted this. It was news. Bennett was saying that selective abortion is wrong period. Liberals have their panties in a knot, and Scott McClellan is buying into their crap.
He's an idiot for couching it in these terms but what he's saying is intentionally outrageous. I believe the word is facetious. unfortunately that emotive doesn't translate well in writing just as sarcasm doesn't translate well in writing.
It gets old. "Kneel at our altars or be destroyed," that's all these screaming, seething hyenas in the media can tell anyone who departs from liberal orthodoxy.
Sociologists have been agreeing for years that a generation of serial killers were probably aborted in their mothers' wombs.
Black women have tons of abortions. Seems remarkable that any issue which involves blacks and isn't perfectly phrased with a touch of ebonics becomes "racist." This is an absolute cult, this political correctness.
If Bush was a poker player the term would be pushed around. He's being pushed around by the other players.
Thought police. Bump.
STFU Bush.
STFU troll.
I think it's obvious Bennett's remarks were taken out of context.
Umm, because the media really wants to nail Bush. You don't seed any DUmp posts having to be repudiated by Democrats...
That's good!
