A group usually seen as one of Barack Obama's allies in the health care debate -- AARP -- says the president went too far Tuesday when he said the seniors lobby had endorsed the legislation pending in Congress. AARP is sensitive to the issue because polls show that Medicare beneficiaries are worried their health care program will be cut to subsidize coverage for the uninsured. At the town hall in Portsmouth, N.H., Obama said, "We have the AARP onboard because they know this is a good deal for our seniors." He added, "AARP would not be endorsing a bill if...

A key House committee chairman on Friday threatened to roll over moderate Democrats who are holding up the health care reform bill and bring the package straight to the floor. The statement underscored the deep divisions the health care reform debate is causing in the ranks of the Democratic Party. Fiscally conservative Blue Dogs are holding up the bill in the House Energy and Commerce Committee over cost concerns and other issues. But Chairman Henry Waxman, D-Calif., on Friday accused those Democrats of empowering Republicans. "I won't allow them to turn over control of the committee to the Republicans," Waxman...

ISLAMABAD — A Taliban faction leader who criticized the militant group's Pakistani head over attacks that killed civilians was fatally shot Tuesday, reportedly by one of his own guards. The attack on Qari Zainuddin appeared to be a sign that divisions within the Taliban have broken into the open as they come under military assault. The army is clearing out militants from the Swat Valley and has been pounding strongholds of Pakistani Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud in the South Waziristan tribal region bordering Afghanistan in apparent preparation for a major offensive. Zainuddin was gunned down in nearby town of Dera...

WASHINGTON — Computer spies have broken into the Pentagon's $300 billion Joint Strike Fighter project — the Defense Department's costliest weapons program ever — according to current and former government officials familiar with the attacks. Similar incidents have also breached the Air Force's air-traffic-control system in recent months, these people say. In the case of the fighter-jet program, the intruders were able to copy and siphon off several terabytes of data related to design and electronics systems, officials say, potentially making it easier to defend against the craft. The latest intrusions provide new evidence that a battle is heating up...

Medieval knights hid and secretly venerated The Holy Shroud of Turin for more than 100 years after the Crusades, the Vatican said Sunday in an announcement that appeared to solve the mystery of the relic’s missing years. The Knights Templar, an order which was suppressed and disbanded for alleged heresy, took care of the linen cloth, which bears the image of a man with a beard, long hair and the wounds of crucifixion, according to Vatican researchers. The Shroud, which is kept in the royal chapel of Turin Cathedral, has long been revered as the shroud in which Jesus was...

TEHRAN, Iran — Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called for "profound changes" in U.S. foreign policy on Wednesday, including giving up support for Israel, during an address to thousands of people in the western city of Kermanshah. President Obama on Tuesday, in an interview with Arabic television, called for more dialogue with Iran to express difference and see "where there are potential avenues for progress." Without mentioning President Barack Obama by name, Ahmadinejad Wednesday repeatedly referred to those who want to bring "change," a word used often in Obama's election campaign, and indicated that Iran would be looking to see if...

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan — A suspected U.S. strike killed six people Thursday on the Pakistan side of the Afghan border, a lawless region believed to be a stronghold of Al Qaeda, two intelligence officials said. The identities of those killed in the attack was not immediately known, the officials said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media. "At present, local Taliban have surrounded the destroyed house, and they are not letting anybody get close to it," said one of the officials. Citing agents and informants in the field, the officials said six...

Just as Americans are finally beginning to reap the benefits of plunging gasoline prices — including more money in their pockets — OPEC is getting ready to squeeze them once again by cutting oil production and driving up prices to refineries. The 13-nation global oil cartel — which includes Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's Iran and Hugo Chavez's Venezuela — will hold an emergency meeting in Vienna Friday to discuss the steep and rapid decline in oil prices. "The era of cheap oil is finished," Iran's Oil Minister Gholamhossein Nozari boasted on Tuesday. When asked what price Iran would want for its oil,...

FRGC - Tuesday - What if? Last week there was a post from a FReeper asking the question about what to have for weaponry 'just in case'.The 'just in case' could be societal breakdown due to natural disaster (Katrina, Andrew, Camille), or in the never spoken of case, restoration of the republic. Now the second may never happen, at least in our lifetime, but every great society in history has had a breakdown due to corruption, coup, or some charismatic leader manipulating the law until a democracy becomes a tyranical theocracy. So, let's look at what would be a good, economical, group...

SAN FRANCISCO — A car burglary suspect plunged 200 feet to his death after he jumped over a wall on San Francisco's Telegraph Hill while trying to flee from police, authorities said. The unidentified man died early Thursday after police say they received a report that someone was breaking into cars on a city block near Coit Tower. Authorities say they attempted to arrest the suspect after they saw him getting out of a car. But the suspect ran and jumped over a wall — apparently without realizing there was a steep drop. He was pronounced dead at the scene....

FRGC – Tuesday – SNUBBIES!!!! Today I am going to bring up the subject of the great and small snubby. Although , the snubby comes in a variety of calibers, all the way from 22 Short up to the S&W 500 Mag, and are fairly large for a snubby. The big bore snubbies do provide compact, outright raw power, and any close encounter with critters that bite and scratch would be well defended against with one of these. Snubbies can also be attributed to the small compact autos, all the way up to an including the Colt Officers size and...

BLUE MOUND, Texas — When two gunmen smashed through the glass front door of her suburban Fort Worth home, Kellie Hoehn didn't think twice. The 34-year-old mother of two grabbed a shotgun that had been pointed at her face early Wednesday, starting a struggle that ended with one intruder killed with his own weapon and another in the hospital. "I wasn't going to let them get to my babies," she said, recalling the moment when she pushed up the muzzle of the shotgun, pointing it away from her children's rooms. Although the intruders told her to keep quiet, she screamed...

Free Republic Gun Club – Tuesday – Pocket Pistols!!!!!! Morning. Today’s FRGC article is about those misunderstood, mouse guns. The smallish pocket 22’s, 25’s, 32’s, 380’s. I will limit the discussion around these calibers and to the revolver/autos available, simply because once you get outside this range you get into larger, holster-necessary type of firearms. I am also not dismissing the derringer type of weapons, but that is another category entirely. The mouse guns have a good/bad history. Generally, of the smaller calibers, they have the drawback of effectiveness or lack thereof. I carry a pocket pistol in a variety...

Free Republic Gun Club – Thursday – Hunting stories. A little off the wall topic today. Most of us who have hunted over the years have a lot of humorous and interesting stories about adventures we have had. Time to share them. One of mine and the one I tell most people is about the time I took a co-worker white-tail hunting in Texas. Now, most of you whitetail hunters out there can attest to how skiddish and supremely paranoid whitetails are. One twig break, and ZOOM, they are gone, and I mean GONE.My co-worker, who had never been hunting before,...

Free Republic Gun Club – Tuesday – RIMFIRES!!!! We all have at least one, and in some cases more than three or four. My better half enjoys a lot of her 22’s when we go to the range and each has it’s own favorite ammo for accuracy. Her latest acquisition, is a J. Stevens Favorite with a factory tang mounted peep-sight with nail driving accuracy using standard velocity ammo. This is representative of the rifle. We also have the highly popular Ruger 10/22, and I am sure we will hear about that one from some of you.For handgunning and as a...

Posted on Tuesday, May 24, 2005 12:09:16 PM by Jack Black Among the many excellent handguns available perhaps none is so beloved by so many as the classic Smith & Wesson N-Frame. The N-Frame is the biggest traditional frame size available in a Smith & Wesson handgun. It dates back to early in the last century when it was offered as a military and police pistol in various guises, including the legendary Triple Lock. Originally offered in .38 Special and other old-school calibers it began its rise to flagship and icon with the introduction of the .357 magnum. One can...

Free Republic Gun Club – Thursday Edition – Sturmgewehr They are called “Black Guns”. They have been maligned since they have become a mainstay of the gun culture. They have had bans, parts restrictions, and some of the most advanced have been forbidden from import into this country. They have been given the name to make them sound evil, to make them sound more deadly than other weapons. They are called ‘Assault Rifles’The very first, the MP44, named Sturmgewehr by Hitler, fired an intermediate cartridge based on the 8mm Mauser. Some say the AK and Kalishnikov used the MP44 as it’s...
