U.S. President Donald Trump has made clear that he wants a deal to end Russia’s war in Ukraine by August 8, the United States told the United Nations Security Council on Thursday.

“Both Russia and Ukraine must negotiate a ceasefire and durable peace. It is time to make a deal. President Trump has made clear this must be done by August 8. The United States is prepared to implement additional measures to secure peace,” senior U.S. diplomat John Kelley told the 15-member council.

That’s nice, but why not just totally disengage from Europe except for trade?

Right around the 80th anniversary of Hiroshima/Nagasaki. What could he do short of using the military? All nations would have to support him. None of this ‘you go first’ stuff.

The ugly deal that makes sense but no-one wants to admit is necessary:

Russia keeps Crimea, and probably the urban extreme eastern parts of Ukraine in Luhansk and Donetsk, but abandons claims to Zaporizhia and Kherson, and rural areas of Luhansk and Donetsk that are proximal to Kiev.... maybe a land corridor along the coast can be negotiated, since the coastal regions are well very heavily Russian culturally anyway. Ukraine would formally remain outside of NATO, but NATO members would sign a protection pact with Ukraine. And Israel joins NATO just to piss off France. (Kidding.)

Ukraine provides protection for Russian-language minorities, including full, private Russian-language TV, radio, internet, universities, etc., but Russian funding is prohibited, including paid advertising.

This would legitimize the concerns Russia alleged, but by insisting on a significant pull-back from the front and emphasizing the extreme losses to Russia’s military, it would delegitimize the means Russia used and disincentivize further aggression.

Negotiable: Zelenskyy resigns.

What no-one wants to admit is that after what Poroshenko has done, Ukraine can never govern the areas of the Donbas that were held by insurgents. Even the Ukrainians acknowledged how evil Poroshenko was by fact that the incredibly huge majority of Ukrainians never considered voting for him when Zelenskyy won; Zelenskyy had been seen as the “compromise candidate” between Russian-Ukrainians and non-Russian-Ukrainians.

So don’t use this as fuel for the neo-Soviets that often dominate this discussion: Poroshenko was terrible, but the Ukrainians got rid of him on their own.

A little off topic, but how's the Ukraine conscription abductions coming along? I haven't seen any numbers for awhile and thought I might ask you about it. I did find the ones for Russia though.
