Sorry for the vanity post...just wanted to let Freepers know who will be guest-hosting Jeopardy! in the coming weeks...I guess I will have to give up my favorite TV show along with most everything else. Freepers: I am in the process of translating, for the first time, a non-fiction book from it's original German into English. As a non-German speaker, I am attempting to use Google Translate, and a painstaking paragraph-by-paragraph mode. However, there are some letters in the original text that are not present on an English keyboard. Particularly a letter that resembles a stylized capital B. Not knowing what sound this iteration represents, I have been using guesswork to try to overcome my ignorance, with only mixed results. For instance, the sentence "Junge Burgersohne, die bisher Sportseglermutzen getragen hatten, lie(stylized B)en sie jetzt...

"Our true choice is not between tax reduction, on the one hand, and the avoidance of large Federal deficits on the other. It is increasingly clear that no matter what party is in power, so long as our national security needs keep rising, an economy hampered by restrictive tax rates will never produce enough revenues to balance our budget just as it will never produce enough jobs or enough profits… In short, it is a paradoxical truth that tax rates are too high today and tax revenues are too low and the soundest way to raise the revenues in the...

Isn’t it ironic how the often-misused and abused term ironic is used in so many instances today, incorrectly, even out of all recognition of it’s true meaning? The remarking on a contradiction between an action or expression and it’s context is, I’ll warrant, as old as language itself. In years past is was not uncommon to hear people on television and radio label coincidences, or sarcasm, or satire, as irony. You hear it these days sometimes in sportscasters, although, now that the public’s acceptance for the term, noted incorrectly, has thankfully waned, it is not as common in the public...

Let's imagine -- for the sake of this discussion I'm having with myself -- that forcing people to purchase health insurance is desirable, ethical and a much-needed tool in solving a national crisis. Well, even those indulgences do not make the individual mandate any less authoritarian or dangerous.

Hey freepers: I have been looking all over for one of those t-shirts that look like the classic murderous tribute to Che Guevera, you know, it's red and I think he has a black hat...but the trick is, it's Ronaldus Maximus' picture! Can ANYONE tell me where to find this t-shirt? Would make GREAT Christmas gifts! Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas to all!

November 16, 2002|3:32 PM Nancy Pelosi’s refreshing embrace of the L-word has provoked cackles from progressive-bashing pundits. Pelosi’s Critics Won’t Laugh Long by Joe Conason Nobody knows whether Nancy Pelosi can prevail where Dick Gephardt failed. What can be said confidently right now is that her ideology will have little effect on her future success. Assuming that Ms. Pelosi wins the minority leadership in the House of Representatives when her colleagues vote on Nov. 14, her ascension will owe more to her personal dynamism, hard work, organizational skills and fund-raising abilities than her opinions about gay rights or medical marijuana....
