  • Someone here asked about unsolicited faxes earlier this month...

Earlier this month, I read a FR thread discussing unsolicited faxes... then today I received one of those offending faxes! Unfortunately, the earlier thread didn't come up with any answers regarding the initial poster's question: who keeps sending those unwanted faxes? As a Freeper since 01/98, I felt a civic duty to look into this matter that has troubled me & my fellows netizens. The faxes, entitled "Hot Stocks On The Street", mention in the fine print that they are sent out by a company named Pathfinder Marketing. Pathfinder's faxes also mention that they took money from another company called...
  • US Army friend in Iraq requests help!

A buddy of mine is a Captain in the US Army in Iraq, and needs help. He is a logistics officer, and a big part of his mission is to help equip the Iraqi army, so they are prepared to take over US Army missions - which will help bring our troops home sooner rather than later. I received the following message from him last week, and told him that if no one else had helped him within 7 days, to let me know because I have "a few friends at a very patriotic website who might be able to...
  • Critical Thinking, as taught by Liberals in a collegiate environment

Critical Thinking: Asking the Right Questions (college textbook) | 11/28/2004 | me
This diatribe examines the college textbook "Critical Thinking: Asking the Right Questions". The textbook purports to teach critical thinking skills to baccalaureate business students. What I found offensive throughout this course text was the use of conservative arguments as examples of POOR critical thinking skills, and the use of extremely liberal arguments as EXCELLENT examples of critical thinking. For example, the following passage was the first detailed example of POOR reasoning and critical thinking: Arguments for banning guns are mostly myths, and what we need now is not more laws, but more enforcement. One myth is that most murderers are...

Things My Math Teacher Did Last Year: 1. Forgot how to find the slope of a line. 2. Tried to express the difference between ( 2 Sin x) and ( 5 Sin x) by yelling out what they would sound like if you turned them into sounds. 3. Pointed the overhead projector out the window instead of at the screen. 4. Taught us the difference between vertical and horizontal. 5. Took a little bit too long to reduce 36/108 to 4/12, and just as long to reduce that to 1/3. 6. Made sure that we were fully aware that Moses...
  • The Flummery Digest discontinued?

    The Flummery Digest ^ | 12/3/03 | mudcat
Whatever happened to The Flummery Digest, that monthly update on politically correct goofiness? I noticed today that it hasn't been updated since June 2003. Some of my favorite past flummeries:March 2003: A nursery school teacher in Yorkshire, England, banned her students from singing ``Three Little Pigs'' out of a concern that it might offend Muslims. Local Muslims responded that while the Koran clearly prohibits them from eating a pig's meat, they have no problem reading or talking about them. Indeed, the Koran itself mentions pigs, and Muslims are often obliged to read and recite the Koran. And, following criticism over...
  • Baghdad's Jews: On their last leg

The Jews of Baghdad trace their presence in Iraq to the court of Nebuchadnezzar and ancient Babylon. But a history that spans 2600 years is unlikely to last another 20. The community that once boasted numerous synagogues and played a major role in the skilled trades have lost all hope. There are less than 20 Jews living in Baghdad, almost all to be found in the al-Bitawin district. Down from over 125,000 less than 60 years ago. End of an era Nidhal Salhi, the community's youngest member, is in her late forties. She could never marry as there were no...
  • Judge Says Constitution Doesn't Mandate Comfortable Prisons

Judge Rules Jail Conditions Not Unconstitutional AKRON, Ohio -- Saying the Constitution doesn't mandate comfortable prisons, a federal judge ruled that conditions at the Summit County Jail don't violate prisoners' rights. The jail is overcrowded and at any given time about 100 of the more than 500 inmates sleep on cots. Prisoners opposing a proposal to end federal oversight of the jail contended that sleeping on cots violates constitutional protections against cruel and unusual punishment and creates a safety risk to inmates, as well as employees. U.S. District Judge Peter Economus agreed to end 30 years of federal oversight. County...

Why do people hold liberal-left positions? (Liberal and left were once very different, but not anymore.) This question has plagued me because I have long believed that most people, liberal or conservative, mean well. Very few people wake up in the morning planning to harm society. Yet, many liberal positions -- I emphasize liberal positions rather than liberals because most people who call themselves liberal do not hold most contemporary liberal positions -- have been wreaking havoc on America and the world. How, then, can decent and often very smart people hold liberal positions? There are many reasons, but the...
  • (unconfirmed report) Japan's Red Army Claims Responsibility for US Attacks: Al Jazeerah Tuesday

(unconfirmed by the source cited): The communist group said that the attacks came in retaliation for US atomic bombs that killed thousands of Japanese in the World War II in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In an unconfirmed report, sources from the Amman offices of Al Jazeerah satellite news channel indicated that a call came in from a caller who was "speaking Arabic with an accent" claimed that the Japanese Red Army is claiming responsibility for today's attacks against U.S. targets in New York and Washington D.C. Middle East News Online has been unable to verify these claims. The communist group said ...
