Hey Freepers! It's been a fun few days lately, getting back on FR since I have been busy with college and stuff. I've read throughout though, and I'm eager to share my book opinions and to hear what you, the intelligent Freeper is reading.Rise to Rebellion, by Jeff Shaara.Usually the efforts of sons pale in comparison to those of the father, at least in the world of writing. Look at the Herberts and the Dune series. There is a major exception when it comes to the Shaara family. I think it could be argued now that the son has surpassed ...

ARKANSAS CITY, AR, USA (EAP) -- A Little Rock woman was killed yesterday after leaping through her moving car's sun roof during an incident best described as "a mistaken rapture" by dozens of eye witnesses. Thirteen other people were injured after a twenty-car pile up resulted from people trying to avoid hitting the woman who was apparently convinced that the 'rapture' was occurring when she saw twelve people floating up into the air, and then passed a man on the side of the road who she claimed was Jesus. "She started screaming "He's back, He's back" and climbed right out ...

NEW YORK (AP) -- Author William Manchester says he's too weak to finish the highly anticipated third volume of his biography of Winston Churchill. Manchester, 79, suffered two strokes after his wife's death in 1998, and said he has tried several times to write the final book of ``The Last Lion'' -- completing 237 pages so far. ``Language for me came as easily as breathing for 50 years, and I can't do it anymore,'' he told The New York Times. ``The feeling is indescribable.'' The first two volumes of the biography, ``Visions of Glory'' (1983) and ``Alone'' (1988), sold about ...

Hey Freepers! Hope everyone had a good fourth of July, here are some book reviews. The Childrens War by J.N. StroyarGet this book. GET THIS BOOK NOW! The Childrens War is one of those novels that comes around every few years that really stuns everyone who reads it. It is an epic novel that really held my attention for every page. Although the novel is over 1,000 pages long and is the work of a first time novelist, it is well worth your time. The Childrens War is an alternate history tale set in our present time, a time gone horribly wrong. ...

THE PC CODE!! That's right, some of you (I won't name names) are completely ignoring the code. It has also come to my attention that many of you are completely oblivious to the ways of PC! For these people I have attached excerpts from a guide on how to be PC. Please read with the utmost care. Q: WHAT IS P.C.? PC stands for Politically Correct. We of the Politically Correct philosophy believe in increasing a tolerance for a DIVERSITY of cultures, race, gender, ideology and alternate lifestyles. Political Correctness is the only social and morally acceptable outlook. Anyone who ...

GOD FORBID WE SHOULD EVER BE 20 YEARS without such a rebellion," wrote Thomas Jefferson, author of America’s Declaration of Independence, to a friend in 1787 regarding Shay’s Rebellion. "….what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms." Reading Jefferson’s words on a hot, sticky night on the week of the Fourth of July, I felt sleep overtaking me. In what might have been a dream, I found myself watching the Founding Fathers as they prepared and began a revolution against ...

Well Freepers, I'm back again with two books I think you'll really enjoy.American Tabloid by James EllroyI'm not usually drawn to crime novels, but Tabloid has a heavy political influence to it. It has been touted as one of the best novels of the 1990's and a true work of art. It fits that bill to a T.The book tells the story of three men in the late 50's and early 60's. Pete Bondurant is an-ex sheriff fired for beating a prisoner to death with his bare hands. He is an extortionist and works as a hired goon for the ...

Greetings Freepers! I've been a freeper for over two years and if there is one thing I have noticed about this community is how well educated it is. Brilliant and insightful commentary just pours out of you folks! Now, in my case, education comes directly from my love of reading. I try to read 2 books a week, with the subjects usually being history and government. I also have a love for novels. So, I'll go out on a limb here and guess a lot of Freepers also love to read. My idea is to create a weekly discussion thread centering ...

Mel Gibson has signed on to play Col. Hal Moore in WE WERE SOLDIERS ONCE....AND YOUNG. The movie will be directed by Randall Wallace. The movie tells the story of a small American calvary force trapped by superior Vietnamese forces during the Battle of Ia Drang in 1965.This is great news. We Were Soldiers Once is my second favorite war book and is a shining example of American military bravery in the face of overwhelming odds. Make sure you read the book before the movie. And this from the APCusseta, GA (AP)-Mel Gibson was scouting possible locations for a proposed ...

Of course, New Jersey will get that obligatory Gore lock color for the last week of the election, the media desperate to keep this race close, but the new numbers in the Asbury Park Press, NJ's second largest and most liberal paper, are showing things a little different. With registered voters, i.e people that are home in the middle of the afternoon on working days, the numbers were:Gore 41%Bush 36%Undecided 18%And in the NJ Senate race between Bob Franks, who is such a decent man that even the NYT had to come out for him against ultra liberal millionaire Jon ...

I was watching the news today and I saw some encouraging poll results. Even in the liberal polls, Bush is ahead anywhere from 5 to 10 percent and Lazio is in a dead heat wth Hillary. Pondering that fact, I started thinking how far we have till the election. Then I thought that it could all could go wrong. What would we do! Just imagine, Gore and Hillary with 1-3 percent victories, Dems take the House. I know we often say off the cuff that we'll get the hell out of this country if that happens, but seriously, what would you do? ...

You think you are sickened by the regular news? Ol Dan Rather just said, and I quote "See, they are being violent. We have to remember, that's a federal offense." Now he says that Marasleysis's comments were made out of emotion and werent sensible. Damn them!!! They are going to spin this.

I've been a loyal lurker for the past year and a half. I've seen a lot on this great center for conservatism, from the best Hillary jokes to Y2K preparation techniques. Impeachment, congressional elections, Pat leaving, and the current race. They've all been more enjoyable because of FreeRepublic. But now it's going wrong.Over the last month or so, the attacks on Sen. McCain have stepped up dramatically. After the McCain backhand to Dubyah in New Hampshire, the attacks exploded. You can't go on the board now without seeing topics like "STOP MCCAIN NOW!", "John McCain.....The Manchurian Candidate", and "McLame clobbers Bush." ...

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up about television tonight. A&E is showing the original motion picture, "The Crossing" tonight, starring Jeff Daniels as George Washington. It concerns Washinton's heroic crossing of the Delaware and his attack on the Hessians at Trenton, New Jersey. It looks pretty good, and I really like Jeff Daniels. Anyone remember the movie Gettysburg? Anyway, it would be good if we could give these kind of movies good ratings so we see more of these TV movies instead of the usual Barbra Streisand/Lifetime fair.

Need to call in a little help. I'm the captain of my high school debate club and I've been tasked with the least controversial topic of...abortion. Oh man. Being an avid lurker here, I think you can guess which side I have taken. Anyway, I was hoping you guys and gals could provide some good links on the web or books that would help me crush the opposition. Thanks for your time.

Just a little funny story. I work at a gun shop as a stockboy, and, yesterday, I got my first chance to work the front desk. Aren't I special! So, I sat there answering peoples questions and telling my boss when someone wanted to purchase something. So anyway, a lady and her young son walk in. The kid has a cowboy hat on, and, as little kids do, stares wide eyed at the guns. I was busy on something until the lady said,"I can't believe this place, they should ban these places." I just turned, not wanting to deal with ...
