A modest plan for saving the country. Thanks in advance for the applause It's the best part of summer, the long lovely passage into fall. A procession of lazy golden days that my sandy-haired, gap-toothed little girl has been painting, small abstract masterpieces in tempera and crayon and glitter, reminiscent of Franz Kline or Willem de Kooning (his early glitter period). She put a sign out front, "Art for Sale," and charged 25 cents per painting. Cheap at the price. A teacher gave her this freedom to sit unselfconsciously and put paint on paper. A gentle 6-foot-8 guy named Matt...

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Two U.S. explorers plan to start a four-month summer expedition to the North Pole next month to gather information on the habitat of an animal they believe could be the first victim of global warming -- the polar bear. Lonnie Dupre and Eric Larsen plan to travel 1,100 miles by foot and canoe over the Arctic Ocean to test the depth and density of the ice in summer in a mission sponsored by Greenpeace, the environmental group said on Thursday. According to some scientific predictions, the Arctic Ocean could become ice-free in the summer within a...

Time to get a gun? Along with our powerlessness against nature and the fecklessness of the government's response to a crisis, a third frightening aspect to the tragedy of New Orleans has been the breakdown of civilization in the disaster zone that accompanied the snapping of the so-called thin blue line. Among the questions it prompts in my mind is one that is old and unresolved: Should I own a firearm?. Thirteen years ago, when Los Angeles was up for grabs during the rioting that followed the acquittal of police officers charged in the Rodney King beating, the images of...

High school now a balloon-free zone Oak Park campus learns to live without latex, as it prepares for a student with a dangerous allergy By Jodi S. Cohen Tribune staff reporter Published November 8, 2003 It was a simple delivery of flowers and balloons, but the bouquet was turned away at the door of Oak Park and River Forest High School. The school's snub was the first reaction to a violation of a new ban on latex products--from medical gloves to Band-Aids, swim caps, gym equipment and even birthday balloons--to prepare for a freshman with a life-threatening latex allergy who...

Posted on Wed, Jul. 30, 2003 Diner of defiance blows smoke at state ban BY MITCH STACY Associated Press TAMPA - John and Wava Saunders are cultivating a reputation as brazen outlaws among the long-haul truckers who patronize their diner off Interstate 4. The drivers who run through this part of the state are getting to know them as the couple who will still allow working men and women to sit and puff a cigarette while eating, in defiance of a new state law that bans smoking in restaurants and other indoor workplaces. A sign on the door of Grandma's...

Since Hans Blix gave his report to the United Nations on Friday, February 14, 2003, the general consensus seems to be that he was reporting basic Iraqi compliance with UN resolution 1441. I believe the truth is actually the opposite. I also believe that the terrorists are winning the propaganda war because people of good will who want peace are not paying close enough attention to facts, but are being led by their emotions. In that light, I present this web page. Full article http://www.derer.com/hansblixreport.htm

On This Election Day Uncle Sam Wants Youto not voteIF YOU ARE THINKING OF VOTING BECAUSE SOMEBODY TOLD YOU YOU SHOULD VOTE, THEN PLEASE DON'T VOTEYou may have seen a so-called public service announcement begging you to votebutIf you need to be told to vote, then you shouldn't be voting. First, You probably haven't paid attention to the issuesSecond, You will probably be voting selfishly, trying to get something for free, not caring about who has to work harder to pay for itOr you will be convinced that your problems are caused by successful groups not sharing what they have with...

Kid Rock was doing a song with ZZ Top on MTV's 20th, something about 'If I Were President' and mentioned enforcing the right to own a gun. Also took a swing at Clinton, having sex in the oval office and lying about it. I normally can't stand MTV but my wife made me watch.

Confederate flag can still draw blood Freddie Morrow was 17 when he fired a .32-caliber bullet into Michael Westerman's heart just south of Guthrie, Ky. His mother had sent him to Kentucky to stay out of trouble in suburban Chicago. (Tribune photo by Alex Garcia) More photos By Robert L. Kaiser Tribune Staff Writer March 19, 2000 GUTHRIE, Ky. -- The last Confederate hero of Todd County lies beneath a headstone etched with an image of a pickup truck, a rebel flag flying from the toolbox in the back. The man in the grave drove a pickup just like it. ...

Strictly a puff-piece giving punk Clinton all the time he needed to promote himself and spread the usual Clinton baloney. Paula Zahn just let him spin to his heart's content without a word of challenge. She looked positively star-struck. Let The Edge know how you feel. Send email to theEdge@foxnews.com
