I began my day around 8 a.m. at the rally/protest between the Washington Monument and the Ellipse, in a sea of flags and people. The crowd most definitely looked like America, and I was struck by how incredibly many women were there. There were also black faces and absolutely scores of Asians. Judging from their signs and flags a large number of these were Chinese and Vietnamese Americans, who have a much fresher and more personal impression of communism than the rest of us. At least one other account I have read describes a feeling of menace in the air....

Islamic Center is vandalized extensively in 2014, also on Christmas, in what local police initially call a “hate crime.” A 20-year-old Middle Eastern woman is slashed across the face and called a “'f***ing terrorist” near Wall Street in New York City just last month. The sudden death of conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia has added new, crisis-level urgency to an already tense presidential race. A recent story from The Houston Chronicle goes into great detail about how Muslims in that Texas city are “on edge” after bloody, high-profile terrorist attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, Calif. The cowbird (in America) and the cuckoo (in Europe) both have a sneaky way of carrying on their species. Both birds are called brood parasites.
