(Rich Galen shares this letter written to him by a reader of Mullings...) Rich, This says a lot about Bush. I just received it from my brother. I thought you might appreciate it. It's sort of ironic for me to forward it to you since I'm usually forwarding your columns to him. :-) Best wishes, Jennifer Laycock ------------------ Jenn Thought you would like to hear a story about the President. I think it is very telling how people act when there are no cameras or reporters around. I am sure that the President did not expect this to be reported. ...

With stock markets still plunging, and the economic slump deepening with today's report that the nation's industrial production declined for the fifth consecutive month, a report circulating out of Washington that President Bush has shifted toward a larger tax cut with a more immediate reduction in personal tax rates is a hopeful sign. Senior White House sources confirm that these reports are true. Yesterday, Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill met with a group of moderate Republicans and Democrats and told them that a House-passed tax bill was not stimulative enough in the early years. Chief economic advisor Larry Lindsey has acknowledged ...

The President has a knack of pinning kicknames on people that really hit the mark. Often, they are quite funny and I believe should be archived for Freeper amusement. If you are aware of nicknames handed out by President Bush, perhaps you could add them to this thread.

"I myself dreamed of a mammoth banner, draped dadaistically like a Christo wrapping from one end of the White House to the other and bearing the legend a human being lives here." So writes Philip Roth in his latest novel, The Human Stain, whose title refers (on one of several levels, naturally) to the genetic material a non-fictional president once left on a young lady's Gap dress. Roth's narrator deplores the "piety binge" led by the likes of William F. Buckley at the expense of a "virile, youthful" Bill Clinton, and scorns the appalled parents who, like Senator Lieberman, would ...

Kline would provide stronger representation The rapidly growing and changing 6th District, wrapping around St. Paul, features a slugfest rematch between incumbent DFLer Bill Luther of Stillwater and Republican John Kline of Lakeville. Kline gave Luther a scare two years ago and this time around is much better funded. Luther, 55, is a savvy lawmaker, with two decades of experience in the Minnesota Legislature before his election to Congress in 1994. Yet in Washington Luther has made more of a name for himself as a tireless fundraiser than as an independent thinker on policy issues. Luther supports using the surplus ...

PRESIDENTIAL ENDORSEMENT (St. Paul Pioneer Press Editorial Board Official Endorsement) Can-do conservatism, move toward center make Bush the more attractive candidate Gov. George W. Bush of Texas has made a convincing case that he would bring fresh, beyond-the-Beltway pragmatism to the challenges facing American government. He should be elected the nation's next president. In many ways, Bush has done for the Republican Party what Bill Clinton did for Democrats eight years ago. He has led his party smartly toward the political center on key issues. Representing a generation of popular, moderate Republican governors, Bush has muted the sweeping anti-government rhetoric ...

Friday, September 29, 2000 The Minnesota Republican Party is offering rewards of $250 to anyone with information that leads to the arrest and conviction of anyone caught defacing or stealing GOP candidates' lawn signs. Tony Sutton, the party's executive director, said Thursday that 50 to 100 signs a week are disappearing from lawns. "It isn't just some kids taking them down," he said. "We suspect it could be politically motivated because it is so rampant." Sutton said signs for U.S. Sen. Rod Grams and Sixth District congressional candidate John Kline have been the most frequently pilfered or vandalized. Right behind ...

Dayton vs. Grams in November vote Senate candidates stake claims on opposite ends of political spectrum BILL SALISBURY STAFF WRITER Minnesota voters will have a clear choice for the U.S. Senate this fall between a liberal Democrat, Mark Dayton, and a conservative Republican, Sen. Rod Grams. Their choice not only will help set the nation's direction on such issues as taxes and spending, Social Security and health care, agriculture and the environment, it could also decide which party controls the Senate. Republicans have a narrow 54-46 majority and could lose power if they fail to hold Grams' seat. Dayton, 53, ...

Abraham's Coattails A few months ago, it looked as though Senator Spencer Abraham would need to ride George W. Bush's coattails to win re-election in Michigan. But perhaps the reverse is now true: A new Detroit News poll has Abraham leading his Democratic opponent, Rep. Debbie Stabenow, 43 percent to 34 percent. Bush also holds a lead over Al Gore, but it's much narrower, 40 percent to 37 percent. In both races about one in five voters are undecided. But there's a clear trend in Abraham's favor. Polls from earlier this summer had him neck-and-neck with Stabenow. In more recent ...

8/01/00 4:45 p.m. Going to School on Powell Top choice for Education Secretary. By Larry Kudlow, NR contributing editor---------------larry.kudlow@ing-barings.com Colin Powell's powerful speech on education reform at last night's GOP convention raises an intriguing question: Wouldn't Powell make a superb choice for Education Secretary in a prospective GWB administration? Conventional wisdom has it that Powell is destined to be Secretary of State if Bush wins. The former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs has indicated that if asked by Bush, he would be available for a return to government service. But he has never stipulated the nature of that service. ...
