Modern Physics and Ancient Faith, by Stephen M. Barr (Notre Dame, 312 pp., $30) Anyone who read Superman comics as a kid will remember Bizarro World. This was a planet, way out in the far reaches of space, where everything was exactly the opposite of Earth: Instead of being round, Bizarro World was a cube; evil genius Lex Luthor was a good guy; and Superman had no superhuman powers. When I was ten, this made perfect sense to me. If space were infinite, then there would be an infinite number of planets, and Bizarro World just had to be one...
  • Evolution of Liberalism

At one point the people who were called liberals were often very pro-business and pro-free market (especially in Britain; for example Gladstone was practically a libertarian.) Now, at least in America and in Britain, liberals tend to be closer to socialism. It seems as if this change happened pretty quickly: maybe in a few decades or less. Why is New England so heavily democratic? Much of it is white middle class suburban/small town types who would would vote heavily republican in much of the rest of the country. In fact New England was relatively Republican in many states as recently as 15 or 20 years ago. I understand that it is a relatively liberal place, but liberals can't be such a large percentage of the population as to explain gore's 2 to 1 victory over bush in 2000.
  • Nixon and Ford

Since this year was the anniversary of Watergate and I wasn't alive back in 1974, I have a few questions about Nixon and Ford. I've heard all the bad things about Nixon, but I was wondering if anyone can tell me about the successes of the Nixon and Ford presidencies? I of course know about the breakthrough with China, but besides that I've heard little else.
