WASHINGTON -- Suspected members of extremist groups have signed up as school-bus drivers in the United States, counterterror officials said yesterday in a cautionary bulletin to police. But an FBI spokesman said, "Parents and children have nothing to fear." The bulletin, parts of which were read to The Associated Press, did not say how often foreign extremists have sought to acquire licenses to drive school buses, or where.

OLYMPIA, Wash. - Less than a day after Democrat Christine Gregoire vowed to concede the race for governor unless Democrats come up with enough money for a full rather than partial vote recount, her party said it had the money to do so. State Democrats scheduled a news conference for 2 p.m. Friday when they were expected to announce that they had commitments for the $750,000 downpayment to pay for a hand recount of all the votes across the state in a governor's race that is closer than any in state history.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Democrat Al Gore took a slight lead over Republican George W. Bush in the Oregon presidential race Thursday as votes cast Tuesday night in Multnomah County were counted. Final unofficial results won't be available until later Thursday, at the earliest, and it appeared possible the margin between the two might be small enough to trigger an automatic recount. My brother lives in Taiwan and had been waiting for his absentee ballot to arrive from Santa Barbara County, California. Somebody on FreeRepublic posted information on obtaining a ballot from the US Consulate in case ballots didn't arrive in time. I e-mailed my brother this afternoon and he called to say that he got a ballot, voted and the FedEx man is picking it up today.Thanks to this list GWB has one more vote in California.I also spoke to my mom tonight. I heard Rush mention on his show yesterday that the Bush Campaign is showing signs of cockiness and he went on to warn them of that danger. Then today on Fox News Special Report with Brit Hume the correspondant covering the Bush Campaign said that after tonight's debate they planned to coast until November 7th.

One thing that we do here in Texas in our schools that many outside of Texas find apalling, is we throughout the year collect and submit student performance data by ethnic/racial background. Individual teachers submit 6-wk reports (we math teachers do in our district) that show what percentage of whites, blacks, hispanics, etc., are passing/failing our district's TAAS-based 6-wk assessment. (TAAS is the Texas Achievement test all children take).
