The 10-month-old puppy, named Mercy, died Sunday despite efforts to save her from extensive injuries. She had been cut, stabbed, doused with gasoline and set afire. At one point last week, her caretakers said she had experienced a comfortable night and was eating. Mercy was found about two weeks ago in a...

FReepers of many talents, *Merry Christmas!* That said, I need help in the idea department. I have in my garage, an outdoor Nativity set of 11 pieces. Baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, an Angel, 3 Wise Men, a shepherd boy, a donkey, a cow, and a lamb or two. At present I do not have a Manger. Displaying the figures without a Manger seems so incomplete to me. Therefore, I want to build a Manger for my front yard; one that could be broken down or easily stored during the spring, summer and fall. I thought the Internet would have some...

HURRICANE Katrina was a horrific natural disaster. To America's Angry Left it was yet another occasion to score political points against President George W. Bush. In the same spirit of opportunism that animated looters who stole television sets, Bush's political foes frantically sought to blame the devastation on him. A measure of the anti-Bush Left's derangement is that it blames him for bad weather. "Complacency will no longer suffice, especially if experts are right in warning that global warming may increase the intensity of future hurricanes," The New York Times editorialised on Thursday. "But since this administration won't acknowledge that...

AMW Capture #846 Fun in the Sun Comes to an End John Dallas Lockhart loved the beach and loved to party. But police say his quest for fun came at the expense of the most innocent of victims, including a 4-month old infant that Lockhart is accused of raping. The U.S. Marshals biggest concern was that Lockhart was the type of person who could blend in anywhere. But when he was profiled on America's Most Wanted on, June 4, 2005, tips came pouring in. Several were from the Venice Beach area in California. Akron, Ohio Police and the U.S. Marshals...

At just a little over 2 feet tall, he's more of a giant than many have ever been or will ever be. Born with a rare disorder called congenital amputation, the young man has only three joints and no elbows or knees. One of his mottos is "It's not what I can do; it's what I will do." For 18 years, he has learned to maximize every ability he has. Likely viewed by many as handicapped, just what abilities could he have? Try these on for size — a 35-16 wrestling record in the state of Georgia and a 3.7...

You might say it is a symbol of the Great American Divide, a teacher putting up a picture of President Bush in the classroom. Some say it is partisanship while others say it is patriotism. Rita Bianco, Parent: "Children should know their president and their first lady!" Parents expressing outrage after a teacher is kicked out of her public school for hanging a picture of President Bush next to pictures of other presidents in her classroom.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - State Education Secretary Richard Riordan has apologized for joking that a child's name meant "stupid dirty girl." In a videotaped exchange at the city's central library on Thursday, a girl asked Riordan if he knew that her name meant "Egyptian goddess." Riordan, who apparently believed he'd been asked what her name meant, replied, "It means stupid dirty girl." Some in the room laughed nervously, and the girl again told Riordan the meaning of her name. "Hey, that's nifty," he said.

REMEMBERING REAGAN In Solidarity The Polish people, hungry for justice, preferred "cowboys" over Communists. GDANSK, Poland--When talking about Ronald Reagan, I have to be personal. We in Poland took him so personally. Why? Because we owe him our liberty. This can't be said often enough by people who lived under oppression for half a century, until communism fell in 1989. Poles fought for their freedom for so many years that they hold in special esteem those who backed them in their struggle. Support was the test of friendship. President Reagan was such a friend. His policy of aiding democratic movements...

My husband is supposed to be traveling tonight. He called me 20 minutes ago to announce that Miami's Airport has lost all power...at least in the B Concourse. An update from him a few minutes ago is that the PA announcement stated that power will be out for at least the next half hour. Attempts to restore power have so far failed. All computers are down. Backup generators have some emergency lighting, but that is all at this time.

WEST PALM BEACH - (AP) -- A judge is being criticized for openly questioning and often reporting the immigration status of abused, abandoned and neglected children in his courtroom. Some lawyers call Roger B. Colton's actions disturbing, saying he abuses his power by revealing to law enforcement details disclosed before him. Colton says he is just doing his duty. ''They're violating the law, and I'm a judge,'' said Colton, whose background included nine years as a special agent with the FBI. ``Don't I have some type of obligation to the system to report it . . . when it's smack-dab...

Being a newly married husband myself, I often wonder what it will be like to take my future daughters on walks to the park. To see them run and pick flowers. To see them chase butterflies. Or, when they are all tired and worn out, I wonder how many times they will come say to me, "Daddy carry me, please, I don't want to walk anymore." This week, I wonder what Bob Schindler imagined as he was raising little Terri. I wonder if he ever imagined his little girl would ever grow to be too big for him to hold....
