Skies over Fort Chaffee were fire red Wednesday night as World War II era buildings went up in flames. Fort Smith Police said the historic Fort Chaffee hospital caught fire late Wednesday night. At least four buildings were engulfed by flames and at least two buildings burned to the ground. "With a shift in the wind, these conditions, this thing, could get out of hand and go a long ways in a hurry, " Fort Smith Fire Chief Mike Richards said. Several fire departments including Fort Smith, Barling, White Bluff and Fort Chaffee were on scene before 10:30 p.m. Wednesday...

    T. LOUIS, MO (KTVI - FOX2now.com)— As we lost count of how many consecutive days the temperature has eclipsed 100, at least one St. Louis area man has taken “self cooling” to a new level. Many motorcyclists talk about their love of the wind blowing through their hair. It seems Jacob Southard prefers the wind blowing through almost everything. He’s been turning heads on Interstate 70, riding his motorcycle while wearing nothing but a “mankini” like the one from the “Borat” movie. Asked what in the world he’s doing, Southard, clad in nothing but a neon green singlet that covers...

House Speaker John Boehner wants to unveil a plan to increase the U.S. debt limit and curb federal spending by Sunday afternoon to avoid any potential havoc in Asian financial markets, media reports said. The Ohio Republican told GOP colleagues in a conference call Saturday afternoon that he still wants to cut as much as $4 trillion from the budget during the next decade, according to participants in the call, the reports said. [snip] Later in the day, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) said congressional leaders were dedicated to the task of keeping a default from happening. “The...

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — Crisis talks convened by President Barack Obama to avert a potential default in just 10 days concluded Saturday after just under an hour of discussions without any apparent sign of progress. Obama sat next to House Speaker John Boehner, according to pool footage, after the two men Friday night gave separate accounts over how talks to cut spending alongside a debt ceiling increase broke down. The body language from the video taken at the outset of the meeting showed the strains, with the two men barely looking at each other. Other attendees at the meeting included Senate...

Oklahoma senator hopes is putting the finishing touches on his plan to reduce the federal deficit by $9 trillion. He expects to release it this week. WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn, who has been working on a deficit-reduction plan worth $9 trillion over 10 years, said he hopes to release the blueprint late this week. That timetable may slip since the scope of the plan requires so many calculations (mathematical, not political). Coburn, R-Muskogee, and his staff have been working on the plan since the senator dropped out of the bipartisan Gang of Six deficit reduction talks in May....

ROSWELL, Ga. -- A public declaration of affection written on a Roswell family's property has them at odds with their neighborhood association. Resident Duden Yegenoglu said her father left the love note on her driveway for her mother. "He was washing my car one day about a month and a half ago, and he wanted to be cute, so he wrote 'Benur,' which is my mom's name, 'I love you,' on our driveway," Duden Yegenoglu told Channel 2’s George Howell. The pressure-washed message was written in all caps, inside a heart. Several neighbors said it was sweet, but while the...

  • Virginia may compost roadkill

The Virginia Department of Transportation is considering composting roadkill, a move boosters say will save money and improve the environment. The agency spends $4.4 million annually removing and disposing of thousands of animal carcasses found on the 57,867 miles of road it maintains. [snip] The remainder typically bury the animals along the roadside. That's a problem because nutrients and bacteria, such as fecal coliform, released by the carcasses can reach waterways, Donaldson said. "It's like super-concentrated fertilizer," she said. "It all goes into the [Chesapeake] Bay ultimately." Also, landfills are sources of methane, a greenhouse gas that most climate scientists...

More than half of the 50 states have sued to block the federal healthcare legislation passed last year. Congressman Steve Womack laid out the Republican response to the ongoing debate. He spoke with 5NEWS as he toured St. Edward Mercy Medical Center Friday. Womack listened as neonatologist Dr. Victor Coloso walked him through the NICU. Hospital CEO Jeff Johnston says it's important that the federal government reduce the deficit, however he wants legislators to understand that healthcare costs money and they need to carefully weigh cuts. "It's important that people have access to quality healthcare, and we try to do...
