The Humvee's gunner, Army Sgt. Charles Horgan, had barely yelled, "R-P-G!" before the front of his vehicle exploded. The blast from a Rocket Propelled Grenade blew Horgan, 21, and Staff Sgt. Jamie Villafane, 31, out of their Humvee. Horgan, who had been standing and manning a .50-caliber machine gun, was knocked in the air and came back down on the vehicle. Villafane, in the passenger seat, was thrown out the side. The two men sat in hospital garb Thursday at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, the largest military hospital outside the United States, telling journalists how they had been ambushed Sunday...

U.S. special forces and CIA agents have already entered Iraq and are scouting potential targets, gathering intelligence and preparing the battlefield for a U.S. invasion that would likely be code-named Operation Iraqi Freedom, military sources told NBC News on Tuesday. [snip] They also revealed that intelligence reports were indicating that Saddam was preparing to use chemical weapons against U.S. troops. Artillery shells with chemical warheads were being handed out to troops of Saddam's elite Republican Guard at Al Kut, southeast of Baghdad, the reports indicated, while preparations were under way to coat bridges and roadways with a lethal VX nerve...

US troops stationed in southern Kuwait are heading for the Iraqi border as diplomats continue to search for a compromise over another UN resolution. Britain's ambassador to the UN, Sir Jeremy Greenstock, said the threat that military events may overtake the diplomatic process had failed to galvanise members of the Security Council. Speaking at a press conference in New York, Sir Jeremy said: "We have made the critical point that there has to be a strong signal that there is a strategic change by Iraq." [...] Their comments came as US forces in southern Kuwait began leaving their bases and...

Former President Bill Clinton on Thursday said the Bush administration should not take action against Iraq without guidance from chief U.N. weapons inspector Hans Blix and the support of Europe. "We should let Blix lead us to come together," Clinton said, addressing members of a synagogue. "Everyone knows [Iraqi President] Saddam [Hussein] needs to disarm or get out of town ... [but] he won't do it unless the world is united." Calling Blix a "tough, honest guy who is trying to find the truth," Clinton said the Bush administration should support the head weapons inspector. Blix will give a progress...

North Korea is capable of striking US targets anywhere in the world if provoked, reports from Pyongyang have claimed. Yesterday, as the dispute over North Korea's nuclear program deepened, US intelligence officials said the communist state probably had one or two nuclear weapons and the ability to hit the US. The new claims, by a North Korean foreign ministry official, appear to verify this. Ri Kwang Hyok said in an interview: "In case there is a self-defensive measure, the attack can be taken to all military personnel and all military commands of the United States in the world," "Wherever they...

"Drawing the Line" by Steven M. Wise A Harvard professor says science itself proves that such animals as parrots, apes and elephants should be considered persons with legal rights. Is a parrot a person? How about a chimpanzee? Or a honeybee? Of course any kid can tell you that they're not. Only people are people. Animals are animals. But Steven M. Wise says it's not that simple. In "Drawing the Line: Science and the Case for Animal Rights," he argues that science shows that some animals really are people. At least, they're legally entitled to be treated that way. Wise...
