Freepers I am turning to you all for assistance in preparing a class lecture on the importance of Mahan's "The Influence of Sea Power Upon History". Specifically I was hoping one of you well read Freepers can direct me to a good, excerpt or summary of Mahan's "The Influence of Sea Power Upon History". Something I can hand out in class. I have read his many articles but none of them seem to cover the major points of his theories succinctly. So I am wondering now if there is a good excerpt of his major work that you all could...

Freepers, as an adjunct professor of humanities, I am most interested in your opinions on American historiography and education.

Freepers here is an opportunity to influence young minds in college. I am an adjunct professor of humanities. Later this month I will begin teaching two courses on the American Experience and Constitutional Change. Every semester I give a term paper assignment based on Wickard v. Filburn and the governmental abuse of the Commerce Clause. I am always gratified by the comments of the students afterwards who tell me they never had any idea of the vast power employed by the government in our daily lives. Well I will still use that case this semester because it is so insructive...

RENO, NV - Reno police have released the name of a man crushed to death after a chase downtown. Wednesday morning about 11, police were helping Municipal Court marshals, who were trying to stop a man with a warrant out for his arrest. The man was on a bicycle, but then dropped the bike and ran. Officers and marshals stopped the search when they couldn't find the man, but then a resident at the Truckee River Terrace Apartments reported finding a man in a trash compactor there. That's where police found 37-year-old Rodney Wright, the man marshals had been looking...

Within the past couple of days, there was an article by Victor Davis Hanson on "Why Culture Still Matters" or something to that effect. It was a series of poignant observations about Europe in particular and our own social decay. As usual Hanson pulled no punches. I read it here on FreeRepublic and now I cannot find it. No keyword searches are bringing it up for me and it is not posted on his private papers website. Does anyone else recall the article or know where I can find it?

Earth 2100. Any Freepers seen this scaremongering future docu-drama? Makes New York City out to be the hope of mankind and a green utopia. Gratuitous use of Obama's green alternatives speeches and a sickening narrative by some fictional character. John Podesta, Van Jones and other alleged experts offer their opinions on civilization's fall. Then of course an apocalyptic future when man's attempts to reverse Globull Warming fail.

Thoughts from a cop who just retired. Just before retiring, some young Officer was busting my chops about how law enforcement has changed, and the system is improving for the best. I just smiled and gave him a little laugh. He asked what was so funny. I told him that I felt sorry for him. When asked why, I told him, "Because in about 15 years, THIS is going to be your good old days." We all saw the change in our jobs. I came on in 1990. And the first order we received when we were assigned to a...

Dear FRiends, Please send prayers up for my nephew and my family. His wife and beautiful 13 year old daughter were killed in the San Bruno fire yesterday. Mercifully he and his 15 year old daughter had left with my sister only a few minutes before the explosion but materially he has lost everything and I can only imagine the horror he is suffering at losing his beloved wife and daughter. My family in the Bay Area is large and they will be doing everything humanly possible to care for them in these trying times but prayers are always welcome....

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - At least four people were shot and dozens were taken hostage Friday at an immigration services center, according to officials and news reports. NBC's Pete Williams cited city and state officials as saying that as many 13 people might have been killed. But Williams cautioned that the information was very preliminary and may change as the hours go by because police were still searching the building. At least 41 people were in the American Civic Association building at the time of the shooting, The Binghamton Press & Sun Bulletin reported

Freepers, sometime early this morning, one of the bravest officers I know was shot twice in the chest and the face while on a domestic disturbance call. Reno Police Officer DelVecchio needs your prayers and thoughts right now. I am told he is currently in surgery and in very serious condition. Officer DelVecchio is an inspiration to those who know him. Without his guidance and mentoring I probably wouldn't have made it through my Academy. Not only is he one of the finest street cops you'll ever meet, he is an absolute patriot and member of the National Guard whose...

California Freepers if you want to do something in a critical area, come to Nevada and work to GOTV on Nov. 1st and 2nd. Here in Reno we need volunteers of all kinds, runners, drivers, poll watchers, phone callers, precinct walkers. You show up and we'll find something for you to do. I was working in the local office today when I got a call from two Bay Area freepers who wanted to volunteer those dates. It sounded like a great idea and the Bush Cheney staffers in the office are happy to have them. If you have relatives in...

Just over two hours ago, it was my very great pleasure and high honor to meet the First Lady of the United States, Laura Bush. She is a most gracious and charming lady, effusive in her praise for all of those volunteering and fighting to re-elect her husband. I was very fortunate enough to have my picture taken with her by a member of the First Lady's staff. I am told that I will receive a copy of the photo in a couple of months. I pray so and will post it as soon as I get it. I had...

Northern Nevada Freepers you CAN HELP. Washoe County Republican Party HQ needs volunteers. I helped out for a couple hours on Monday and they can use help on any days. Mostly it's office staffing, answering phones and questions and passing out stickers to walk-in customers. You get to meet folks from all walks of life, to register voters and chat up locals. It's really interesting and if you can spare even a few hours a week it's enjoyable knowing you are helping to make a difference in a battleground state. Please drop by the County HQ at 465 S. Meadows...

Last night, at 0331 PST Washoe County (Reno) Sheriff's Deputy John Wiberg gave his life in service to his country and community. While responding to a report of an armed robbery in progress, in a snowstorm and whiteout conditions, Deputy Wiberg lost control of his vehicle which drifted into oncoming traffic. Deputy Wiberg was struck and killed. Efforts to resuscitate him failed. John is survived by a wife and 4 children and I ask you all for prayers for them in these tragic times. John was a friend of mine since our Academy days and I will miss him keenly....

Shameless plug for my blog. I usually post 3-4 times a week as I get time. We Know Whats Right, where we shed light on the right, respect governance by common sense and the Constitution and home of the weekly rant and recipe. Recipes are posted on Monday, rants midweek and whatever strikes my fancy the rest of the time...

What a great day yesterday was. Part of this week I was assigned to augment Secret Service with dignitary protection as the Safari Club International was in town. While working the assignment on Tuesday evening I had a chance to briefly meet Lt. Col. Oliver North, to shake his hand and thank him for his service to our country. That was neat but today was the best. Yesterday morning I was able to meet and shake hands with the 41st President of the United States, President George Herbert Walker Bush. I thanked him too for his lifetime of service to...
