No. There is no such thing as a “high speed lens”. There are “fast” lenses, which means they have a very large aperature. A professional photographer absolutely always carries/uses the fastest lens they can. He didn’t have some special lens “not normally used” for this event.

As close as he was he wouldn’t be using a longer lens. Shooting at f/1.6 is almost wide open, because it was so bright out you have to have the shutter speed cranked up to 1/8000. Had it been cloudy that shutter speed would have been much slower.

You can tell what age cohort one belongs to, by the cast of SNL they like. I do like watching YT shorts of Che and Jost doing their Christmas Weekend Update. They write jokes for the other person that they have not seen prior to the live read. Some funny stuff in there.
