    "Our men and women went to Saudi Arabi {for Operation Desert Storm} and lived in tents, and they didn't even commit a crime," Arpaio said. "Why would someone complain about putting convicted prisoners in tents?"

    I'm with Sheriff Arpaio on this one. There are military barracks that are not as nice as the description of the prison above.

    In addition, prison is supposed to be a deterrent, but it may be a step up in lifestyle for some. Where's the deterrent in that?

    A few verses for you:

    The Navy Hymn

    Eternal Father, Strong to save,
    Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
    Who bid'st the mighty Ocean deep
    Its own appointed limits keep;
    O hear us when we cry to thee,
    for those in peril on the sea.

    God, who dost still the restless foam,
    Protect the ones we love at home.
    Provide that they should always be
    By thine own grace both safe and free.
    O Father, hear us when we pray
    For those we love so far away.

    Lord, guard and guide the men who fly
    And those who on the ocean ply;
    Be with our troops upon the land,
    And all who for their country stand:
    Be with these guardians day and night
    And may their trust be in they might.

    O Father, King of earth and sea,
    We dedicate this ship to thee.
    In faith we send her on her way;
    In faith to thee we humbly pray:
    O hear from heaven our sailor's cry
    And watch and guard her from on high!

    God speed!

    I have the same FRPR sticker that Constitution Day shows here. In addition, I have an Army National Guard plate and an American flag.

    Not on my truck, but tickles me every time I see it (on a car at my university):

    Did you not find this piece to be satirical, as in Swift's A Modest Proposal?

    The tests showed that the brain activity of the child subjects was reduced significantly, especially on the side where the cellphone was held

    I am wondering if this is not more correllation than causality. Most people hold their phones to their left ear, and the left side of the brain controls the "logic". The right side of the brain controls the "emotion". It stands to reason that if the subjects were having an emotionally stimulating conversation--much more likely, IMO, than an intellectually stimulating one--the side away from the cell phone would register higher activity and the cell phone (left) side would show lower activity. Thoughts?

    Reality check, how many years did the stealth 117 nighthawk exist before it was acknowledged by the government? 20 I think, something like that. I wouldn't bet against microchip implants being around a lot longer than this latest digital angel publically offered example.

    I was wondering about this myself. We (the U.S. military, I mean) sure got a lot of injections prior to Desert Storm. < /tin foil >

  • Soldiers to Be Sent to U.S. Borders

    If you have to detain even ONE, you need cops to do it, because the soldiers can't.

    Precisely. At least, if the Posse Comitatus Act is still in effect:

    Title 18 US Code, PART I, Chapter 67,
    § 1385, The Posse Comitatus Act

    Whoever, except in cases and under circumstances expressly authorized by the Constitution or Act of Congress, willfully uses any part of the Army or the Air Force as a posse comitatus or otherwise to execute the laws shall be fined not more than $10,000 or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.

    But then,

    Major and minor exceptions to the PCA, which allow the use of the military in law enforcement roles, blur the line between military and civilian roles, undermine civilian control of the military, damage military readiness, and inefficiently solve the problems that they supposedly address. Additionally, increasing the role of the military would strengthen the federal law enforcement apparatus that is currently under close scrutiny for overreaching its authority. THE POSSE COMITATUS ACT: A PRINCIPLE IN NEED OF RENEWAL

    Since you pointed out that border crossing is a criminal offense, it would seem the above would apply. I hope this doesn't come to haunt us.

    What is the punishment for refusing to obey this law? How will it be enforced? Will ultimate responsibility be placed on the parents or the children, themselves?

    Logistically, I see a nightmare. Personally, I think a forced pledge is anti first amendment. It should, however, be thoroughly explained in language understandable to children and then encouraged.

  • Bush Proposes Tracking System for Noncitizens

    A White House official said a technology for the tracking system has not been chosen, but that biometric equipment -- which can identify people through biological markers, such as their faces, palms or irises -- will be considered.

    Can someone please explain this further. I am unclear how this tracking system will make the borders more secure. If I read it correctly, citizens will not have to present biometric identification--and so I presume only their passports/papers. Noncitizens declaring themselves as noncitizens will have to submit to the biometric data collection.

    Here is the problem I forsee. Biometric data is virtually impossible to fake, but papers (passports, etc.) are not. If a terrorist wanted to gain access to the country, it would still be simpler--even under this new system--to fake paper identification. So, that leaves only 2 possibilities:
    a) Only honest noncitizens will be tracked. In fact, I am not sure how the U.S. would convince noncitizens to submit to biometric data collection, but for the sake of arguement, I will assume the answer will be no entry without it.
    b) This will not just apply to noncitizens. Therefore, no likelihood of forgery.

    Please correct me if I am reading this wrong.

    North Carolina alone changes from the Down East accent on the coast to the gentle drawl midstate to the Appalachian dialect in the hills. Vast differences. Of course, this isn't across the board; just my observation.
