Political analysts are engaged in a wild melee trying to predict the twists and turns of Senator John McCain's political gyrations. Some say he will switch parties, some predict another run for the presidency. Regardless of the final outcome, certain lessons can already be learned about what happens when a politician turns against his political base. Consider the fact that Arizona is a hotbed of pro-gun sentiment. In past elections, Arizona gun owners have rewarded McCain's support of gun rights with thousands of reliable votes, yet he has recently chosen to thumb his nose at them not once, but three ...

Congratulations! You are a proud new parent, having just given birth to a healthy infant. However, when the doctor comes in to see if you're ready to go home, he starts quizzing you about whether you have taken any training classes on child rearing. Finding that you have not, he solemnly tells you that he will not release you and your child from the hospital until he is satisfied that you have the ability and knowledge to care for your child. Not only that, he will be sending a nurse to your home within two days after you get home, ...

During the past few years we've heard a lot about stealing elections, overturning elections and the will of the people. Jeffords' party switch has altered the decision made last November in relation to the Senate and given control to the Dems. Has Jefford's overturned an election?

An employee at a physician's office in Eugene fired a semi-automatic pistol at an intruder Wednesday afternoon after an irate man broke into the locked business and threatened employees, police said. No one was injured in the incident, which began about 4:45 p.m. when a man began telephoning and threatening employees at the Oregon Podiatry Clinic at 2893 Oak St. The caller's ex-wife used to work at the office, and the man was upset with employees, Eugene police said. The employees locked the doors and called police. But the man arrived before police and pounded on the doors, trying to ...

The afternoon before Josh Smith slipped the steak knife into his cargo pants, two classmates raised a concrete block and threatened to bash in his head. Josh, a Glendale eighth-grader, wasn't even thinking right or wrong when he pulled that knife after the boys threw dirt clods at him and taunted him, "Come on. I dare you to do it." All he could think of was scaring the boys enough so that they'd leave him alone. But pulling the knife turned Josh into a felon. He is 13 years old and among a growing number of Valley teens who are ...

In an opinion piece in the March 30 Los Angeles Times, John R. Lott Jr., senior research scholar at the Yale University Law School, wrote that the media emphasizes coverage of mass shootings but rarely reports on incidents where a citizen saved a life with a gun. "Few people realize that civilians use guns defensively to stop about 2 million crimes a year, five times more often than guns are used to commit crimes," said Lott, citing national surveys. Lott, whose research attempts to debunk many of the claims of gun-control advocates, said the media fails to provide equal coverage ...

It seems the only time we hear reports about lawful self-defense with a firearm, if we hear such reports at all, is when the assailant is actually shot. Statistics show, however, that more than 2 million lawful gun owners use firearms for self-defense each year and although a warning shot is sometimes necessary, most victims merely display the weapon in order to ward off an attack. Unfortunately, it is often the case that news outlets don't consider the newsworthiness of such incidents to be of great importance and, as a result, the reports (if they are publicized) often consist of ...

State Senator Accused of Using Youths for Political Activity Formal complaints have been filed against State Senator Cheryl Jacques charging her with criminal misuse of federally funded workers for political action. A Massachusetts government watch group, Citizens for Truth in Politics (CTP), has filed videotapes and letters which it says proves that Jacques solicited the involvement of 150 federally funded “City Year” youth workers for the "First Monday" rally sponsored by her on October 2, 2000 where she called for more gun control legislation. Federal law under U.S. title 18, sections 666 and 641, prohibits the use of federal funds ...

Sorry to distract attention from the news threads but I really, really need some help. Last night I received an e-mail from my web hosting service that they had filed for bankruptcy and as of day after tomorrow they would no longer be hosting web sites. Here's my problem (and bear with me cuz I'm in foreign territory here): It is my understanding that I have to amend the Name Server info with the registrar of my domain name and that a user name and password to do so would have been issued when the name was registered. However, the ...

Anti-gun McCain Bill up in the Senate This Week --Urge your senators to oppose the McCain-Feingold bill Gun Owners of America E-Mail/FAX Alert 8001 Forbes Place, Suite 102, Springfield, VA 22151 Phone: 703-321-8585 / FAX: 703-321-8408 http://www.gunowners.org (Monday, March 19, 2001) -- Beginning today, the Senate began debating the McCain-Feingold Incumbent Protection Bill. By now, you are no doubt aware of the devastating impact that legislation would have on pro-gun groups. That bill, S. 27, would: Broadly define groups such as GOA to be engaged in "electioneering" because they merely mentioned officeholder/candidates on television or radio during the period before ...

It was a typical Saturday afternoon in my central Florida neighborhood. The cloudless sky was bright blue. Kids were riding bikes, roller-skating or playing ball in the yard. Parents were tending to the various chores that seemed always to be relegated to the weekends. The sounds of lawn mowers, hedge clippers and other landscape tools drifted on the breeze. Occasionally you would hear the sound of a baseball announcer from a distant radio somewhere or the splash of someone jumping into a nearby pool. My Dad had just purchased a CB radio and was installing it in his car. ...

PALATKA -- Fifteen-year-old John Silva sat quietly in handcuffs as a Putnam County judge sentenced him yesterday morning to life in prison with no chance of parole for killing his schoolmate and friend, Jerry Lee Alley Jr., last May. The sentencing went quickly, lasting less than an hour, with brief statements from the Alley family and friends asking Judge Arthur W. Nichols III to set an example for other children and send Silva to prison for life. Silva wasn't old enough to be considered for the death penalty. "It goes without saying that Jerry was a special boy," said Anne ...

A key part of Hillary Clinton's original health care plan that would have allowed third parties to collect your private medical data and records may become federal law in a matter of weeks. President Bush's new Health and Human Services Secretary, former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson, is considering whether last-minute regulation changes made by Bill Clinton should go through. The new federal rule would allow doctors, hospitals, druggists, HMOs and insurance companies to pass and share your medical information without your permission. But Thompson put the rule changes on hold, partly because they allow marketers access to private medical records ...

WASHINGTON, March 5 /U.S. Newswire/ -- "Our hearts and prayers go out to the students, staff and their families of Santana High School. This is yet another example of the tragedies that ensue when children have easy access to guns. As we approach the second anniversary of the massacre at Columbine High School, Congress has still done nothing to prevent such shootings. "While the details of this shooting are still emerging, we do know this: we can prevent such tragedies from happening. Whether a gun is taken from the home or purchased at a gun show or on the streets, ...
