The latest news from the governor’s office is that Jan Brewer is expected to call the state legislature into a special session to revamp Child Protective Services, the troubled child-welfare agency that shamefully neglected to investigate well over 6,000 reports of child abuse and neglect. Gov. Jan Brewer will not give ranchers and their employees permission to kill endangered Mexican gray wolves on federal lands. The measure vetoed Tuesday was crafted by Sen. Gail Griffin, R-Hereford. She has been a vocal foe of the program by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to reintroduce the wolves into sections of Arizona and New Mexico, saying they are endangering not only cattle but also pets and children. The Arizona Court of Appeals has revived a lawsuit challenging Gov. Jan Brewer's expansion of the state's Medicaid insurance plan for the poor. The court ruled Tuesday that lawmakers have the right to sue over a hospital assessment that funds the expansion.

The Republican Party has grown more conservative over the past couple of decades. But news commentators sometimes wrongly imply that GOP voters take an extremist position on every issue. As I described on Friday, for example, Jeb Bush’s support of Common Core educational standards isn’t likely to hurt him if he runs for president in 2016; the issue is neither all that relevant to most Republicans nor all that divisive. If candidates running to Bush’s right are looking for a wedge issue, they’ll probably have some better choices.

Gary Kiehne, an honest to goodness ropin’ cowboy from rural Arizona, is running for Congress in Arizona’s First Congressional District. At first glance he appears to be the real deal, but according to Wednesday’s Yellow Sheet (subscription only), Kiehne has a problem or two. It seems Kiehne, a reputed multi-millionaire, has not paid his 2013 property tax on a Casa Grande mobile home. Also, this public document available from the Pinal County Assessor’s office indicates he is claiming more than one primary residence, defined in Arizona as Legal Class 3.
