Then a few days later, the family received a $132,000 claim from the city of Overland Park’s insurance company, saying that the piece had been damaged beyond repair. “No one would ever to expect that to come into a place that kids are invited and have to worry about a $132,000 dollar piece of art falling on their child,” Goodman said. “Because he didn’t maliciously break that. It fell on him. It was not secure, it was not safe -- at all.

Her whole life is a break Earlier this week, you probably saw a story about Chelsea Clinton receiving a lifetime achievement award. The Hill ran it with some dubious language, and many people missed the fact that it was an award from “Lifetime” the television network. Failing to capitalize the “L” led to a firestorm about privilege, and how a woman who has achieved virtually nothing could be granted and award for her non-existent achievements. Carefull reading spared some of us who are inclined to agree with that sentiment.

The spirit of Spring Break is alive and well on the freeways of Miami. Bizarre footage has emerged showing a young woman twerking on top a moving car as it speeds off into the sunset. The scantily-clad woman seems completely unfazed by the passing cars or the fact that she's only a slip away from a potentially deadly fall onto the MacArthur Causeway.

The state Senate has already endorsed the measure. Legislators in the House could consider it as soon as Tuesday. Companies that provide the internet service can apply for repayments of some, or all of sales taxes on a project. The state Board of Economic Development decides the amount of the refund.

On the 11th daughter Mary headed out with me all set for the day. I made a latrine run, got back in bed, fell asleep, and at some point my oxygen cannula detached.Mary started getting weird phone calls about mid afternoon, came home and I was having big time problems. At any rate, no evident brain damage (it never has been), but I feel pressure washed, too many drugs, too many needles, too much hospital food (I am eating salty stuff to catch up as I write)I'm gonna hang in the background for a few, but I'm home.

MILWAUKEE, WI — The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that it is not a violation of constitutional rights if police break down a citizen’s door, search the home, and confiscate firearms, so long that they believe it is in the citizen’s best interest. A Doctor’s Concern The lawsuit stems back to an incident that occurred on May 22, 2011. A psychiatrist, Dr. Michelle Bentle, phoned police to report that a patient had expressed a suicidal thought during an outpatient appointment; the woman had received some bad news and privately expressed grief during a difficult appointment. At approximately...

Texas Republican Rep. Lamar Smith reacted harshly to a new report detailing the crimes committed by 36,007 criminal immigrants that Immigration and Customs Enforcement released last year. “This would be considered the worst prison break in American history, except it was sanctioned by the President and perpetrated by our own immigration officials. These criminal immigrants should have been deported to ensure that they could never commit crimes on U.S. soil. But instead, ICE officials chose not to detain them and instead released them back onto American streets,” Smith said in a statement Monday.

Missouri senators passed legislation Wednesday offering up to $1.7 billion of incentives over two decades for Boeing to assemble a commercial airplane in St. Louis. The Senate's 23-8 vote in a special session sends the measure to the House with just a few days remaining before what Gov. Jay Nixon has said is a Tuesday deadline to submit a proposal to Boeing. (snip) Some of the senators who voted against the plan questioned the wisdom of tailoring tax breaks for a specific company instead of cutting taxes for all businesses or individuals. Nixon vetoed a broad-based income tax cut earlier...

The offices of a Dallas law firm representing a high-profile State Department whistleblower were broken into last weekend. Burglars stole three computers and broke into the firm's file cabinets. But silver bars, video equipment and other valuables were left untouched, according to local Fox affiliate KDFW, which aired security camera footage of the suspected burglars entering and leaving the offices around the time of the incident.

The Brooklyn EMT who callously refused to help a dying pregnant woman because she was on her coffee break saw her official misconduct charge dropped today after EMS chief Abdo Nahmod — who initially supported the case against her — flip-flopped, leaving frustrated Brooklyn prosecutors no choice but to dismiss the case.

React To Contact, Break Contact and Insurgent Operational Planning I talked about Battle Drills awhile back. Recently Max Velocity talked about Reacting to Contact. We label the steps differently but basically do the same thing. I will get into it a bit but do not feel the need to write it from memory or get fancy paraphrasing FM 7-8. Either you know how to do it and I'm wasting my time or you don't and me writing about it for a couple paragraphs will not fix the problem so I'm wasting my time. For those without an Infantry or Special...

Ed Schultz, host of MSNBC's the Ed Show, believes that Republican presidential contender Herman Cain is pandering to "white Republicans out there who don't like black folks" and accused Sen. Jim Demint, R-S.C., of using racist langauge in his opposition to Obamacare. On his show last night, Schultz said that Demint, whom Cain has mentioned as a potential running mate, repeated an "old southern racist term when talking about defeating President Obama during the health care debate." Schultz's example? He quoted Demint saying that "If we are able to stop Obama on this [health care law], it will be his...

How do you score partisan points against a president who looks to have won a military victory in Libya at very low cost? Simple: Attack him for being away from Washington at a summer house when the victory was won. That line of attack was tested by some Republican talkers and bloggers this weekend. I wonder if we'll hear more of it in the coming days. Almost nothing in American politics drives more people to say more ridiculous things than the subject of presidential summer vacations. Back during the George W. Bush years, Democrats sneered and scoffed at the 43rd...

More than 2,000 angry Egyptians broke down barriers at Israel’s embassy in Cairo, burned Israeli flags and raised the Egyptian flag, backing up demands by the provisional military government’s cabinet that Egypt expel Israel’s ambassador.
