Do you know who Gen. Robert Edward Lee, Major Gen. George Edward Pickett and Major Gen. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain were?
-
BRUNSWICK, Maine - Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was many things in his lifetime: Medal of Honor winner for his bravery during the battle of Gettysburg, governor of Maine, and Bowdoin College president. With interest in the Civil War growing in recent years, Chamberlain has gained almost mythic stature, with his image appearing in movies, TV documentaries, on bottles of ale, and even in a stage musical. But somehow, Chamberlain - who died in 1914 and is buried here - had failed to fully capture the hearts of the people of this picturesque college town where he spent most of his adult...

Chamberlain Statue Nearing Completion in Brunswick, Maine Sept. 9, 2002--He was a college professor turned military leader, turned governor, turned college president. He wrote some of the most memorable lines to come out of the Civil War from a participant and, according to at least one recent movie, single-handedly saved the Union army at Gettysburg. Yet there has never before been a statue of Gen. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain in Brunswick, Maine, home of Bowdoin College with which he was so intimately connected as student, professor and president. This situation is about to be rectified. The statue, by Swanville artist Joseph...

Can any good brothers from Maine or Alabama confirm to me the source of this quote, said to be found in a book written by Joshua Chamberlain. An Amazon review says this is found on page 21 in the book, but a search of other internet links does not mention this letter as much as one would imagine. Here is the Amazon quote/review: A letter written to Chamberlain...by a Confederate combatant of the 15th Alabama Regiment which assaulted Little Round Top on July 2...is astonishing(p.21).The former rebel soldier simply states that he COULD HAVE SHOT CHAMBERLAIN TWICE during the battle...

BRUNSWICK, Maine — Bowdoin College will no longer bestow the Jefferson Davis Award, after the college’s board of trustees voted to approve President Clayton Rose’s proposal to end the practice. The annual cash award to a student of government and legal studies who excels in constitutional law was named for the Confederate president. It was established in 1972 with an endowed gift from the United Daughters of the Confederacy, according to a news release from the college. In 1858, Davis received an honorary degree from Bowdoin College.

The New York Times today reports on a disturbing development at Bowdoin College: For 40 years, evangelicals at Bowdoin College have gathered periodically to study the Bible together, to pray and to worship. They are a tiny minority on the liberal arts college campus, but they have been a part of the school’s community, gathering in the chapel, the dining center, the dorms. After this summer, the Bowdoin Christian Fellowship will no longer be recognized by the college. Already, the college has disabled the electronic key cards of the group’s longtime volunteer advisers. … The students, who plan to meet...

In the end, Adam Wheeler, a 24-year-old who conned his way into Harvard and benefited from more than $40,000 (£26,000) in grants and prizes, flew too close to the sun. Not content with having bragged his way into one of the world's most prestigious universities, he felt driven to apply – equally fraudulently – for Rhodes and Fulbright scholarships. Wheeler's impressive record of deceit began in 2007 when he was expelled from Bowdoin College in Maine for plagiarism. Instead of reflecting on the wrong he had done, he went the other direction, developing a whole new persona and turning lying...

The Da Vinci Code, a New York Times Bestseller since it was published in 2003, is used in a class at Bowdoin College called “The Portrait of the Marys,” which emphasizes Mary Magdalene over Mary the Mother of God. If the movie flops at the box office, as current trends indicate it might, the film could become required college viewing as well. On the 17th of May, the month in which the Catholic Church celebrates Mary, the Virgin mother of Christ, the newly formed Interfaith Coalition Against The Da Vinci Code called for a boycott of the film. The Coalition...

Ruth Malhotra’s involvement in the College Republicans attracted attention from Georgia Tech where she is an International Relations and Public Policy major, when the CRs held a protest of The Vagina Monologues. The students had a sign with quotes from the Eve Ensler play [being shown on campus], and were ordered to white-out some of the quotes by university officials. When the CRs attempted to hold a diversity bake sale to call attention to Georgia Tech’s affirmative action policies they were shut down by campus police. Malhotra offered these recollections while speaking on a panel with other dissident students at...

Some campus journalism is becoming quite good, particularly on the alternative, largely conservative, side. Part of this results from the donor base of alternative college newspapers vis-à-vis official organs. That is, while the former largely survive on outside contributions, the latter are usually dependent on school funding. Thus, while student journalists working for their house papers strive for independence and objectivity, they eventually have to confront the “Whose bread I eat, his song I sing” phenomenon. Alternative university newspapers are free from this potential constraint by college officials. The Carolina Review, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,...

Two Bowdoin students were ejected from President Bush's campaign appearance in Bangor yesterday on suspicion that they planned to protest inside the event. Another Bowdoin student, who worked at the event, was involved in the removal. Bree Dallinga '06, co-president of the Bowdoin College Democrats, and Ashley Cusick '05, both self-described liberals, said they planned to attend the event to observe and possibly protest by wearing anti-Bush t-shirts. According to Dallinga, after successfully passing through security, Dan Schuberth '06 spotted the two students and requested their removal from the event. Chris Averill, executive director of the Maine College Republicans, said...

One thing is for sure in the 2004 presidential election-the Bush team should not count on too many votes from Bowdoin College faculty. Recently the conservative Center for Popular Culture did a study on the political bias in the administrations and faculties of 32 elite colleges and universities and found that Bowdoin has 23 Democrats to every one Republican. Republican professor Christian Potholm of the Government department said, "I believe there are only four Republican professors on campus, and I personally think it needs the attention of the administration and the Faculty Affairs Committee. Ideological diversity is as important as...
