Those damnable jerks. You'd think they'd be grateful. You'd think they'd applaud and cheer wildly and grovel and offer us their prettiest first-born daughters or at least politely and on bended knee acknowledge our big oily happy capitalist Christian largesse.

At the 1984 Republican National Convention, Jeane Kirkpatrick, then the Reagan administration's UN delegate, gave a speech that has stuck with me. She blasted the Democratic Party's approach to foreign affairs, repeating the phrase "the blame-America-first crowd." I hated the speech at the time but have recently reread it. It has aged better than I have.

Kirkpatrick's mantra mostly applied to the Cold War. But it could just as aptly be applied to some of those - note the modifier "some" - who opposed the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and almost everything else the U.S. does.

Thank you very much for that warm welcome.

Thank you for inviting me.

This is the first Republican Convention I have ever attended.

I am grateful that you should invite me, a lifelong Democrat. On the other hand, I realize that you are inviting many lifelong Democrats to join this common cause.

Alright, while Oprah did a good job last year on Iraq, today she decided to "blame America first," giving liberals...including wacked out Michael Moore...a forum to give their opinions. Staying true to liberalism, the show was all about how America caused 9-11 and we are responsible, not the terrorists. Sick! Let's let our opinion be known! WASHINGTON – If America hates itself, it is ill prepared to beat back the forces of terrorism. Dan Flynn, author of the newly released book "Why the Left Hates America,” says that as America contemplates war with Iraq and deals with North Korea's illegal nuclear buildup, our country is under relentless attack from the radical America-hating forces, much of whose momentum was put in place by the Soviets during the Cold War. When the Cold War ended and the Berlin Wall fell, the well-funded left-wing attack on America and infiltration of its institutions did not stop. The hard left in...

Corinne Thatcher is a junior majoring in Latin American studies and a Collegian columnist. Her e-mail address is cet131@psu.edu. It seems as if President Bush has found a new cause to distract television viewers from the heated political commentary that has besieged the issue of Iraq. In a speech Tuesday, Dubya spoke with incredulity about the lack of knowledge U.S. students have about their nation's history. He expressed amazement, for example, at the fact that the average student doesn't know that James Madison was instrumental in drafting the U.S. Constitution -- though I cannot help but wonder whether he...

A warrant has been issued for Cofer's arrest. Cofer is accused of firing a single gunshot into the back of Larry Buchanan's head during an argument Friday at 19535 SE 134 in eastern Cleveland County. Witnesses told Oklahoma City police that Buchanan and Cofer started arguing Wednesday...

(The following has been edited slightly to correct typos, edit out names of people involved and to preserve some personal reflections) September 11, 2002 - 7:55 am One year ago, America was under attack. I still can't believe it was that long ago. It seems like it could have been yesterday. One of the other things I can't believe is the amount of people who died. I sit on a DART bus, running on route 6 (on Kirkwood Highway), and I just passed Price's Corner (Shopping Center). Earlier on this journey, I passed Ursuline Academy, and waited for the bus....

Many American college faculties want to react to the War on Terror as a replay of the Vietnam War. Unfortunately for these Blame America Firsters, circumstances are different. This war threatens all 284 million Americans, not just soldiers in Southeast Asia 8,000 miles away. This war angers and unifies Americans; the Vietnam War depressed and divided them. Students overwhelmingly and enthusiastically support the War on Terror. During Vietnam, by contrast, students were divided. This war is not ambiguous like Vietnam; it is clear-cut. 92% of the American people support the War on Terror. This war transforms even the liberal voters...
