Vanity - why is there even a Wounded Warrior Project?

I've noticed some commercials recently by the wounded warrior project. What
am I missing here? Why aren't soldiers cared for for injuries sustained while serving? Does government/military aid cease after a soldier leaves the service? How can this be?
