Old and busted: Most transparent administration ever! New hotness: The system is rigged, and not just in the Democratic primaries. The campaign-finance watchdog site Open Secrets reports that DNC e-mails published by Wikileaks show DNC officials apparently coordinating with the Obama administration to reward donors with appointments to boards and commissions: Email exchanges involving top officials at theDemocratic National Committee released along with private documents by WikiLeaks show that DNC officials hoped to reward top donors and insiders with appointments to federal boards and commissions in coordination with the White House. The revelations give an inside look into how the...

Biden’s Appointments Speak to an Extremist Agenda

He was packaged to American voters as “Lunch Bucket Joe,” a moderate, a voice of reason who would bring factions together and sooth a “suffering” nation. In his inaugural address, resident Biden repeated this message, stating, “Today, on this January day, my whole soul is in this: Bringing America together. Uniting our people. And uniting our nation.” But a casual review of several his political appointments raise serious questions about the cultivated image of Biden as a unifier and a centrist. The administration has nominated a series of individuals with far-left political views and many with a history of divisive...

Presidential Appointments and Managing the Executive Branch

Political Appointee Project ^ | not sure, ca. 2010? | James Pfiffner
pulled quote: "... Since Roosevelt’s Presidency, the Executive Office of the President has gained about 2,000 people, and the number of political appointees has increased to more than 7,000. Setting aside White House staffers and about 3,000 part time Presidential appointments, each new President fills about 3,000 positions with his or her partisans. To lead departments and agencies, contemporary Presidents make appointments to about 800 full time PAS positions, which require Senate confirmation (not including US attorneys, US marshals, or ambassadors, which are also PAS). In addition, each new administration can appoint partisans amounting to 10% of the Senior Executive...

Appointments: A Rarely Recognized Gubernatorial Power

There is generally little recognition of how many appointments to boards, commissions and other governmental bodies a governor has authority to make, or how many members of such bodies a governor could remove. Some of these boards and panels are trifling, while others wield considerable power. Gov. Rick Snyder exercised his authority over the Michigan Quality Community Care Council (MQC3) – the dummy employer used for the forced unionization of Michigan’s home-based caregivers – when he replaced all of its members on the eve of the 2012 election. This was the action that finally led to the end of the...

SEC judge appointments unconstitutional, U.S. high court says

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court gave presidents more control over key jobs in federal agencies on Thursday, ruling that the way the Securities and Exchange Commission selected in-house judges who enforce investor protection laws violated the U.S. Constitution. The justices agreed with President Donald Trump’s administration that the SEC, in having low-level staff install administrative law judges, infringed upon powers given to the president in the U.S. Constitution’s “appointments clause” regarding the filling of certain federal posts. The ruling could reverberate through the federal government, which has nearly 2,000 administrative law judges who....

VA appointments backlog adds more delays for veterans

Washington Examiner ^ | 08 Aug 2021 | Darrell Owens
After the longest war in our country’s history, the United States is on the verge of ending its open involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq. As we wind down these wars, our nation owes a great debt to those who volunteered to serve. Our technology, politics, and culture look a lot different than they did 20 years ago, and our Veterans Affairs should look different too. Our country’s newer veterans need an adaptable, agile, and flexible VA to meet their needs. However, the VA has shown it is neither adaptable nor flexible despite Congress approving new authorities and massive increases in...

Time to Rethink Trump's SCOTUS Appointments

If the leaked SCOTUS opinion is authentic (Roberts says it is for what that's worth), then those of us, myself included, who have criticized Trump's SCOTUS appointments ought to attaboy them for trying to get rid of the horrible Roe non-law. The ones in favor (according to reports) are: Alito, Thomas, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Coney-Barrett. Of course, the last 3 on that list were put there by Trump.

Over the course of the last six decades only one Supreme Court appointee of a president representing the party of the American Left has veered ever so slightly from the progressive party line on any case of significance. That individual, Byron "Whizzer" White, was named to the Court by John F. Kennedy back in 1962. Among those few cases where White departed from his voting pattern there is not a single instance that his deviation involved a deciding vote. On the other hand, the list of "Republican" Supreme Court appointees over the same period, constituting a majority on the Court,...

People at risk should be tested for atrial fibrillation every time they attend a health appointment. Atrial fibrillation is the most common heart rhythm disorder globally. The number of adults aged 55 years and older living with the condition in the European Union is expected to more than double from 8.8 million in 2010 to 17.9 million by 2060. People with atrial fibrillation are up to five times more likely to have a stroke than their healthy peers. The disorder often has no symptoms and remains undiagnosed until a stroke occurs. The consortium identified the ability of atrial fibrillation screening...

As the end of President Obama's second term comes to a close, the tenures of his closest advisors and cabinet members are doing the same. President-elect Donald Trump has been working non-stop in Trump Tower all week as potential appointees come in and out of the building for consideration. Tomorrow, he'll head to his golf course in New Jersey to meet with former presidential candidate and Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who is reportedly being considered for Secretary of State.

Democrats won't be able to block Trump appointments due to rules they imposed

Senate Democrats are not going to be able to block Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions bid to become attorney general. And they can’t do much to stop Kansas Rep. Mike Pompeo from assuming the helm of the CIA. And they have only themselves to thank for it. That’s because exactly three years ago, the Democratic Senate majority — led by Harry Reid (Nev.) — rammed through controversial rules fundamentally changing the way the Senate does business. They unleashed in November 2013 what’s called the “nuclear option” allowing senators to approve by a simple majority all presidential appointments to the executive branch...

In the United States and in Italy the changes are most spectacular. With new “Bergoglio-style" bishops and cardinals. In Belgium, Danneels’s revenge against Ratzinger. The triumph of the St. Gallen club. Much more than reforming the Vatican curia and finances (to which he is applying himself more out of obligation than out of passion, with no comprehensive plan and too often relying on the wrong men and women), it is clear by now that Pope Francis wants to revolutionize the college of bishops. And he is doing so in a systematic way. The two talks that he gave this autumn...

New British PM Truss makes history with non-white top appointments

The new British Prime Minister Liz Truss on Tuesday selected a cabinet where, for the first time, a white man will not hold one of the country's four most important ministerial positions. Truss appointed Kwasi Kwarteng – whose parents came from Ghana in the 1960s – as Britain's first Black finance minister while James Cleverly is the first Black foreign minister. Cleverly, whose mother hails from Sierra Leone and whose father is white, has in the past spoken about being bullied as a mixed-race child and has said the party needs to do more to attract Black voters. Suella Braverman,...

Some 49-year-olds turned away from J&J vaccine appointments after ‘error’

A number of 49-year-olds who turned up at Croke Park for Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) Covid-19 vaccine appointments on Saturday were turned away due to being under the age of 50, the Health Service Executive (HSE) has confirmed. A HSE spokeswoman said the National Immunisation Advisory Committe (Niac) guidelines stipulate these vaccines are “not recommended for this age group [under 50] at present”. “When this error was identified we immediately made every effort to contact those affected by phone and text to advise them not to attend their appointment today… We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused,” she added. Niac...

The U.S. district judge began his 94-page ruling sanctioning the AR-15 assault rifle for home and militia use by equating it with a Swiss Army knife. Yes, you read that correctly. And it’s all you need to know about the quality of the judge’s tortured opinion — even if it is ultimately upheld, heaven forbid, by the conservative U.S. Supreme Court. But come on, that couldn’t actually happen. Right? We’ll probably find out. This is how San Diego-based federal Judge Roger Benitez — the gun lobby’s best friend in recent years — began his opinion: “Like the Swiss Army Knife,...

Wikileaks reveals apparent sale of presidential appointments by DNC

It has always been taken for granted that presidents appoint wealthy donors to commissions, ambassadorships, and other honors. But we have never before seen evidence of the way the transactions are carried out. However, thanks to Wikileaks, we have an actual spreadsheet listing donors and possible purchases of office being circulated among DNC officials. Chuck Ross of the Daily Caller has the story. The spreadsheet — which was accompanied by emails sent between officials with the DNC’s finance team — contains 23 names of little-known corporate executives and professional fundraisers who have donated to the committee and various Democratic political...

[Catholic Caucus] New Cardinal Appointments Before the Summer Break

Rumors are gathering in Rome that it might soon come to the convening of a consistory to create new cardinals. Cardinal appointments always mean a redesign of the elective body for a possible conclave. Next Saturday, a decent consistory will take place, where, according to Jan Hendrik Stens (Domradio), "surprises might be possible". Currently, according to the electoral code for a conclave, which provides for a maximum of 120 papal electors, five elective seats are free. Pope Francis could forgive these and keep a few more "already in stock,” as in the course of next year, five more seats will...
