USCCB COVERAGE OF THE SUMMER SESSION
EWTNews Director, Raymond Arroyo and his guest will provide extensive coverage of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Summer Plenary Session. Tune in for daily live coverage of the events.
On one thread (I think it was the thread on the NYT being about to out that cardinal; if not, it was running at the same time) someone posted a link to the Roman Catholic Faithful website that had this bit. A lot of people might not have clicked the link, since the poster posted several paragraphs, but not this one. It was apparently an older posting on the RCF site, because it said that he "will become" the head of the USCCB.
Some more than others. A professor I had in a Renaissance Poetry class mentioned once that in the second half of the 10th century, architecture pretty much ground to a halt in Europe. So many people were so sure that A.D. 1000 would be the end of the world, it didn't seem worth building anything.
I remember posting the link. Here is an excerpt about Bishop Gregory.
"Other Bernardin creations are Bishop Wilton Gregory of Belleville, a native of Chicago, slated to be the next president of the NCCB; and Archbishop John Vlazny, former seminary rector in Chicago and former bishop of Winona."
Here's the link again if anyone is interested.
I concur with the RCF folks that Bernardin and his boys are at the root of this problem. It is true that he still has some of his "boys" in key positons. Maybe the the reason I seem to be in the minority of Catholic Freepers who feel something positive is going to come out of this conference is I don't believe their influence is what is once was.
From your keyboard to God's ears (screen?)!
AC, see Pegleg's post #383.
Good post. Yes indeed. Weakland, I might add, would have been one of St. Pius X's worst nightmare's. or visa versa :^)
You think I haven't been doin' that all day long. Forgiven! ;^)
Yes, instead of inculturating society, the Church in Amarica has been inculturated.
I'm not ready to look at that stooopidity! I'm steamin' as it is.
"Another Bernardin creation was Bishop Robert N. Lynch of St. Petersburg, who once revealed how, when he was a young man not knowing what to do with his life, was encouraged by Bernardin to enter the priesthood. He took the advice and enjoyed a great career, moving, from his ordination in May 1978 as a priest of the Archdiocese of Miami, to seminary rector, to general secretary of the NCCB, and bishop of St. Petersburg in 1996."
See my link in Post 383 for the link to the complete article.
There is room for forgiveness -- I did long ago. But it wasn't my grandson or son or nephew that killed himself. Nor was I so close to the victim as to be victimized. Let me say that this family is a good family of average faith. Their faith would have been increased had the bishop and others involved cared for their spiritual welfare. They did not. They never asked for forgiveness. This I know for a fact. One cannot know the hurt and anguish without first hand experience.
The bishop and diocese need to ask forgiveness for what has occurred. When they do, then the victims will have an impetus to forgive. The burden is on the bishop and the diocese.
That said, please pray for this family. That the Lord help them to understand that forgiveness heals a wounded heart and consoles the anguished spirit. The Church has failed to pastor them in this, maybe your prayers and mine will be helpful.
This is also true. May the Lord touch this family with faith and forgiveness; may they be healed through the death and Resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ who died for all our sins.
What an appropriate message. (Also the shortest verse in the Bible!)
Something like "Bishops mumble a bunch of meaningless platitudes"?
Then Bishop Gregory delivered a speech someone wrote for him full of elegant apologies thought the delivery style was more Junior High Debate Society than anything else.
The bishops listened to 2 liberals Scott Appleby (prof. Notre Dame -- who does not have a mandatum) and Margaret O'Brien Steinfels (the far left wing editor of "Commonweal") who correctly identified the problems but used the opportunity to trumpet their failed leftist agenda. Then the bishops listened to the heart breaking accounts of men and a woman who had been abused by priests as well as by the Church -- one was an ex-priest. They were clear in their united call for zero tolerance, and they took great pains to say they weren't looking for cash handouts but for justice.
Then a psychotherapist lectured the bishops on the meaning of clergy abuse of minors and defined a priest's sexual abuse of a child or teenager was incest because the priest was the archetypical Father of the family. She slammed the bishops, told the truth and made Father Gould and Raymond Arroyo on EWTN nervous and unhappy with her presentation. They went into executive session and no report was given save Bishop Gregory saying that they had been very frank with each other.
The answer. GET RID OF THE QUEERS!
LOL!
He's got an all-star cast addressing the "homosexuality and the priesthood" problem including: Michael Rose, Fr. McSweeney, and William Donahue.
Alan: Do we need to reconfirm the Church's teachings regarding sexuality or a 'reexamination' as Richard Sipe suggests.
Donahue: We are not going to reexamine the Church's teachings regarding slavery, etc... We are far more tolerant of people who teach regarding homosexuality and abortion than we are of racists.
Sipe: What about the priests who father children?
Donahue: (Ballistic) We have priests who steal! Should we change Church teachings regarding theft?!
