Is America a Christian Nation or Was America Founded as a Christian country?

I see this question often and the spirited arguments and debates that followed caused me to assert that America was founded on Christian principles.

Some people look at our flag and our money and think it was either founded on the principles of the Dutch East India Company, the British East India Company, or the Freemasons.

Genesis 1

3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

"And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good" = 1776

"And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness." = 1776

My typical answer is “Yes”
I then turn my back to the inquisitor as the conversation is over.

We must remember that Pilgrims fled religious persecution in England to practice their own religion without fear of persecution.

Neither the Constitution nor the Declaration of Independence makes any specific reference to the Christian religion. Most of the newly independent states had a state supported church but allowed other Christian denominations and Jews to worship freely. The majority of the delegates to the Constitutional Convention were professed Christians, although a few such as John Adams and Benjamin Franklin, were Deists or Unitarians. Several, including Washington, were Masons, which compromised their Christian witness, given the Masonic emphasis on good works as an avenue of salvation. However, the Christian religion, in its Protestant form, permeated the culture of 18th Century America.

The Founders most often cited Scripture as their defense of their actions and positions. They were also familiar with English common law which was partially rooted in Biblical precedent. Other sources used by the Founders included authors like John Locke and Algeron Sidney, who incorporated Biblical principles in their writings on government.

The Reformation sparked by Martin Luther is directly responsible for our founders’ understanding of “freedom of conscience”.
Without the Reformation, humans would only hope and dream for “life, liberty and happiness”.
As a matter of fact Luther, through Phillip Melanchthon, wrote directly about Freedom of Conscience in both the Augsburg Confession and the Apology (Refutation of the Roman Response).
That freedom, outlined in the Declaration, is specified in the several clauses of the 1st Amendment.

Western civilization is founded on Christian principles (among other things, like the legacy of the ancient Greeks).

Yes. And actual history knowledge is not learned like it used to be.
Every signer of the constitution added a belief in God. Here is one.. John Adams

“Suppose a nation in some distant Region should take the Bible for their only law Book, and every member should regulate his conduct by the precepts there exhibited! Every member would be obliged in conscience, to temperance, frugality, and industry; to justice, kindness, and charity towards his fellow men; and to piety, love, and reverence toward Almighty God ... What a Eutopia, what a Paradise would this region be.”
—Diary and Autobiography of John Adams, Vol. III, p. 9

And the path Obama took.. He spoke abroad denouncing our Christian heritage.

If you forsook your earthly father, you would probably lose your inheritance..
Speaking against Jesus.. Deny the existence of a Holy God, puts you in a position with no protection. Cast out of an inheritance.

We are in need of a higher power foundation and help, than what a non regenerated man can do.
God bless Trump.. And America.

i don’t remember the Founders making reference to Budda or Mohammad or Hinduism or even atheism.

But the one true God, the Jehavah God, the Father of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the Father of the Lord Jesus Christ is the architect of the founding documents.

In spirit as well as in letter.

“America was founded on Judeo Christian principles”

Correct.

Although I’m unaware of Christian principles that were not already Jewish principles.

It was created for Christians. Ultimately it won’t hold together when Christians lose all political power in the country
