I often wonder what my grandmother—Mamaw, as I called her—would have thought about her grandson becoming Catholic.

I knew that Catholics worshipped Mary. I knew they rejected the legitimacy of Scripture. And I knew that the Antichrist—or at least, the Antichrists’s spiritual adviser—would be a Catholic. Or, at the time, I would have said, “is” a Catholic—as I felt pretty confident that the Antichrist walked among us.

Their acceptance of both scriptural and traditional authority slowly appeared to me as wisdom, as I watched too many of my friends struggle with what a given passage of Scripture could possibly mean. I slowly began to see Catholicism as the closest expression of her kind of Christanity: obsessed with virtue, but cognizant of the fact that virtue is formed in the context of a broader community; sympathetic with the meek and poor of the world without treating them primarily as victims; protective of children and families and with the things necessary to ensure they thrive. J D Vance: “I was never baptised. I was raised Christian but never baptised. I was first baptised in 2018. Usha was actually raised non-Christian. She is actually not Christian. But I remember when I started to re-engage with my own faith, Usha was very supportive.” Vance told Fox News in the latest interview.
The interviewer asked Usha herself why she was so supportive. She gave three reasons.
“I did grow up in a religious household. My parents are Hindu. That is one of the reasons why they made such good parents. That made them very good people. And I think I have seen the power of that in my own life. And I knew that JD was searching for something. This just felt right for him,” said Usha Chilukuri Vance.
She also said that they as a couple also agree on family life and how to raise their children.
“And the answer really is, we just talk a lot,” she concluded
Wow. I had no idea Vance was so religious. I hope Trump didn’t just invite another Pence through the gates.
Isn’t he Catholic?
It appears that he has a loose / diffuse / disorganized Protestant or even Evangelical background, but that he has now (relatively recently - eight or so years ago) embraced Catholicism.
I am slightly skeptical of the zealotry of recent converts.
Nevertheless: More power to him.

Religious believers are often the best allies against tyranny because they are willing to fight for the freedom to live according to their beliefs.
But I worry about people who are so certain in their spiritual beliefs - claiming to ‘know’ things that can’t be known - doing everything in the name of god can be divisive since people have different beliefs.
I like President Trump’s humble and pragmatic approach - doing things in the name of common sense.
Go ahead and be as religious as you want in your personal life - but can we just try running the country using common sense?
