It's not sola scriptura. It's not sola fide. It's a doctrine most people don't even know by name.

It looks like this is another thread of the same people saying the same things.

And we all anticipate a blind squirrel wandering in and finding a nutor two.

Your personal opinion.

Not so, as it is RCs who are one's who typically label those who provide reproof of Rome as being anti-Catholic, including by you to me, not mere commentary, even asserting that the governments in + Mexico and Central America have always been anti-Catholic, even very anti-Catholic, while only an RC could assert and contend that that there ever EVER been even a scintilla of anti-protestant bigotry on FR.

And despite the many Catholic attacks on historical Prot Cath on FR, with a history of incessant apologetic for her, it was Prots who were censured by management a few years ago for responding with a series against Rome, not doubt due to constant RC whining. Which is partly why you do not see the likes of "The Catholic church’s Biggest Bible Problem." But which has been shown, since RC posting of her propaganda has resulted in abundant exposure of her fallacies, and thus such are an argument against being a RC.

Your comment: “Yet any reproof of the actually false beliefs of RCism is censured as anti-Catholic attacks. Which they are.” JESUS is the Truth. One can accept or reject it. May you find God’s Truth and not just personal opinion. God Bless you.
Indeed JESUS is the Truth. One can accept or reject it. May God grant you “repentance to the acknowledging of the truth.” (2 Timothy 2:25)

In the west, those who could read could read Latin, and those who couldn’t read Latin couldn’t read.

More to the story, of course.

The University of Toronto, not exactly a bastion of Catholicism, still had Latin as part of its entrance exam in the 1920’s, and maybe even for a while after that.

Harvard, also not exactly a bastion of Catholicism, still had Latin as part of its entrance exam in the 17th c.

Harvard College Lawes of 1642
[from New England's First Fruits; emp. mine]

1. When any Schollar is able to Read Tully or such like classicall Latine Author ex tempore, and make and speake true Latin in verse and prose suo (ut aiunt) Marte, and decline perfectly the paradigmes of Nounes and verbes in the Greeke tongue, then may hee bee admitted into the College, nor shall any claime admission before such qualifications. [like modern SAT scores, such a requirement indicated the level of education one had received, and achieved. This served practical purposes of course, as copies of Scripture and other classics were also still mostly in Greek.]

2. Every one shall consider the mayne End of his life and studyes, to know God and Jesus Christ which is Eternall life. Joh. 17.3. [Today, personal as well as intellectual ignorance of the Biblical Christ abounds among Harvard students.]

3. Seeing the Lord giveth wisdome, every one shall seriously by prayer in secret, seeke wisdome of him. prov. 2.2,3 etc. [Instead, Harvard today militates against such Biblical wisdom , and peity. Today, if any activity is done "in secret," it is fornication (1 out 4 women have an STD).

4. Every one shall so exercise himselfe in reading the Scriptures twice a day that they bee ready to give an account of their proficiency therein, both in theoreticall observations of Language and Logicke, and in practicall and spirituall truthes as their tutor shall require according to their severall abilities respectively, seeing the Entrance of the word giveth light etc. psal. 119, 130. [The goal here was to produce "able ministers of the New Testament" (2Cor. 3:6), "rightly dividing the word of truth" (2Tim. 2:15). Today, the Bible is almost wholly abandoned as the literal and authoritative Word of God, and the very deceptions Harvard was founded to prevent abound therein!] More, by the grace of God

.

"It looks like this is another thread of the same people saying the same things."

I have no problem challenging error over and over again. Do you?

The Pharisees were Jesus' most bitter and implacable opponents. For them, God is mostly one who makes demands - those elaborate but petty rules that must be kept. (sounds familiar, huh?)

In the Gospels, Jesus challenged them most frequently, not holding back. I will defend the Truth and contend with such people, too. I am operating under orders: "Go therefore and make disciples..." Matthew 28:19

I'd rather be in the battle every day than standing by and watching.

But I do whole-hardheartedly agree with your conclusion:
"Not only did God write the Bible, He did a good job of it!"

After the printing press came out things did begin to bifurcate somewhat between the educated and the uneducated, and between the half-educated in Catholic countries and the half-educated elsewhere, but in nearly every country that isn’t the U.S., learning multiple languages is part of education, and Latin was the Lingua Franca before French was. Even after French becamae much more important, educated people and Catholics learned Latin.

I believe both Princeton and Harvard still have one of the commencement addresses delivered in Latin.

Cornell in the 1890’s expected at least four languages (French, German, Greek, and Latin IIRC) on top of English. I doubt that the U of T was at all out of line for the Anglophone world-—ENgland was still dragging pretty well everyone who was remotely academic through the Gallic wars in the 1950’s. WHther or not it was expected, top Canadian Catholic high schools required those on any sort of Academic track to take Latin, and in some cases Greek, that is superior to that required for many current undergrad degrees in Classics.

See my other post to Elsie.

See, isn't that what happens around Christmastime.

People get wound up about Jesus' genealogy, because for example, atheist groups have their arguments about inconsistencies in the lists, plus Jews will add that the tribe (and Messianic Davidic lineage) comes through the father, so Christian doctrine is contradictory, on and on.

Lots of time goes into those debates to show otherwise.

And then there's the arguments over Jesus' birthday. Those holding to the theory it was on Tabernacles have their sure proof texts, those in the springtime camp have theirs, those holding to December 25 have theirs.

His birthday was not documented so the debates rage on, which is really unfortunate. When will it ever end?

Not everyone can be right, so there's a lot of fake stuff out there masquerading as the Gospel truth.

If I devoted so much time to myths and endless genealogies, I wouldn't find all the excellent material that I do!

Luck o' the Irish?

Dang it yourself Elsie.

CONTEXT IS KING IN READING THE BIBLE!!!

What is the context right there within Matt. 13:55-56?

Is not this the carpenter's son?

is not his mother called Mary?

They are talking about Jesus immediate family including his mom and dad.

and his brothers, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? And his sisters, are they not all with us?

Get a clue.

Now this kinda stuff is what upsets Mormons; but I do NOT understand why...

Why should it upset so called Mormon’s? It is essentially what they believe. That has always been kind of your problem. Lack of understanding.

Because you want to believe and say things that are not true relative to man’s requirements/commandments vis a vis the one true and living God.

You even laid out for all to read many verses from the Book of Mormon, that say precisely what you seem not to understand.

“If you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen.”

There are anti Catholics Protestants and anti Protestant Catholics who like to pick fights.
There is no point to these arguments on an anonymous interment forum.
Will one persons mind change ?
We all know the answer, no.

So what is the point?

People need to get a job and do something productive.

But I’m not your overseer, so have at it.

So obvious? Then why do many tens of thousands of denominations? And which perspective on what salvation and doctrine do you embrace:

Baptist
Methodist
Lutheran
Episcopalian
Church of Christ
Unitarian
Mormon
Jehovah’s Witness
Presbyterian
Evangelical
Charismatic
Seventh Day Adventist
Etc, etc, etc.

So much for the plain sense of scripture. They all think they have it right. And no, they don’t agree on the essentials. That’s why they are separate denominations.

Come home to the faith started by Jesus that your denomination broke off from sometime after 1517.
One, holy, Catholic Church.

“I see, but what explains the anarchy in the Catholic world?”

I said theological anarchy, i.e dogma.

There is no dogmatic conflict within the Catholic Church.

There is an always has been bickering in the Church over non-dogmatic issues.

Thank you for your response.

Your comment; “The Bible is clear that God alone can forgive sins (Mark 2:7; Luke 5:21), and Christ, being God, has the power to do so, but He never communicated any such power to His apostles, nor did they ever assume any such power to themselves or pretend to exercise it. In fact, it is the mark of antichrist to attempt anything of the kind because, in doing so, one usurps the divine prerogative and places himself in God’s seat. Because of Grace, believers in Christ can confidently declare that all their sins are forgiven for Christ’s sake and to His glory.”

Yes, only God forgives sins, but Jesus Christ delegated his authority to the Apostles and their successors. God is the one who forgives sins through the priest in the Sacrament of the Confession/Reconciliation. Matthew 16:18-19 and John 20:19-23

In Mark and Luke, they were questioning Jesus authority to forgive sins. Jeus delegated his authority to the Catholic church and their ordained priests.
