April 13 - Jesus on Murder: Contrast to the Rabbis - Devotional
GracetoYou.org ^ | 2008 | John MacArthur, Grace Community Church

Posted on 04/13/2022 4:19:00 PM PDT by metmom

“‘You have heard that the ancients were told, “You shall not commit murder” and “Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.” But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court’” (Matthew 5:21–22).

With just two sentences Jesus shatters the rabbinic view of murder, which was so complacently self-righteous. Because of their externalism and legalism, the Jews had an inflated view of themselves. But Jesus destroyed that thinking with the declaration that a person guilty of anger, hatred, cursing, or defamation against another is guilty of murder and worthy of a murderer’s punishment.

All anger, hatred, etc., is incipient murder, as the apostle John writes, “Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer” (1 John 3:15a). By that biblical standard, we are all guilty of murder—after all, who has not hated someone at one time or another?

Not only does Jesus here sweep away the rubbish of the rabbinic, traditional view of murder, His total indictment blasts away any notion of self-justification so common to everyone. The way the Jews thought in Jesus’ time is identical to people’s prevalent thinking today. Even believers can feel proud that they are “not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers” (Luke 18:11)—and we could add “murderers.” Jesus in that parable and in this passage says we are all potentially capable of the worst sins, even murder, because of the sometimes evil attitudes of our hearts.

Not to consider the state of your heart and confess thoughts of anger and hatred, which can lead to taking someone’s life, is not to consider that the Lord can hold you guilty of murder.

Ask Yourself

What benefit is found in knowing that you and I are capable of the most heinous crimes imaginable? Does recognizing this startling piece of information have an effect on your relationship with God and your resultant manner of living?

Perhaps - but the place where they are worshipping is a church, not a synogogue. They are worshipping a man, as well as 3 “gods,” and are thus apostates WRT Judaism (though, of course, anyone can repent their sins and be forgiven by God). Were I not Jewish, had questions regarding Judaism and knew what Messianics really were, I would *NEVER* ask them anything about Judaism.

You should watch some of Rabbi Tovia Singer’s videos on YouTube. He deprograms those Jews who have fallen for the lies of the missionaries. He’s literally got hundreds of videos, debunking the lies, and debunking the contradictions, mistranslations and purposefully misleading information in the Christian scriptures regarding Judaism and what is in the Tanach (which is the 5 books of Moses, plus the prophets, plus the writings like the Psalms).
Universally, his experience is that those who have fallen for those lies are woefully misinformed about their own religion.

It is obvious you do not understand the trinity, but do not be upset, for there are very few of us Christians that do as well!

Since you are Jewish; if you had questions regarding Christianity, would you ask your rabbi about it?

Evidently you've heard one side of the issue.

Have you listened to the other side's explanations of the supposed lies, contradictions, mistranslations, and alledged misleading information?

He gives both sides - he is very careful to explain what Christians believe and why, and to give every benefit of the doubt to what’s in the Christian scriptures...and STILL they contradict themselves in many ways and misquote/mistranslate/take out of context MANY things in the Hebrew scriptures.

My particular rabbi - no, he’s not an expert in Christianity and its scriptures and doctrines, but he certainly knows ours very well. **HOWEVER** there are a few rabbis that do have such knowledge, and Tovia Singer is one of them. But don’t believe me - go and watch several of his videos yourself to see FOR YOURSELF if he is knowledgeable or not about your scriptures.

Sounds similar to this:

Acts 26:28 And Agrippa said to Paul, “In a short time would you persuade me to be a Christian?”

I meant to point something out here when this thread was going, but others things came up. My apologies. It was to clarify what John MacArthur said. He’s not in my denomination, but I have to think he was alluding to a similar, though not identical, thought that the Apostle Paul wrote in Philippians 3:8:

7 But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith—

I tend to trust what Jesus said in the scriptures. Sometimes I may not understand it, though.

Does anyone know what MacArthur has said about Matthew 5:17,18?

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.”

Elsie— you can check here for your Torah-mandated responsibilities: noahide.org

Zeke! I actually didn’t see this post as at that time I was fully engrossed in the written and oral Biblical laws of Passover preparations-—

BUT— Haven’t you heard the Midrash that David was not present because his father wouldn’t allow it— as he (David) was rejected? And wow what a story! Rejected because he was presumed to be illegitimated! Even maasu habonim hayisa l’ROSH PINA... the stone the builders rejected became the head stone! If you haven’t heard, I’ll find it for you. It’s the story of Jesse separating from his wife when he doubted his own bloodline....because perhapd Ruth COULDN’T HAVE converted to Judaism?!

Ancesthtnr— 2.5 billion Christians can’t be wrong, right? Of course there are 45,000 interpretations.... Which is right?

Who said the Messiah will perform miracles? Who said he’s a deity (G-d forbid) who said he’d come again? who said he atones for sin at all—let alone for the world? Who said he comes through faith (abrogating, G-d forbid, the Torah and mitzvos that the gentiles can’t understand as literal connections to the One Above...not burdensome “Law” that must be performed under pain of death....)

And most fascinatingly, who said there aren’t perfect people? We call them Tzadikim— they’ve killed or conquered their inclination to do the opposite of G-d’s will. The rest of us? Well— it’s our lifelong duty to Think, Speak, and Act completely in accordance with G-d’s will. Fake it til you make it and G-d rewards you as a tzaddik— Or not— and you struggle your whole life to act according to halacha in the world— in G-d’s “four cubits of halacha.” (See the Tanya by Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi—

https://www.chabad.org/library/tanya/tanya_cdo/aid/6237/jewish/Lessons-in-Tanya.htm )

Wash your hands like a Jew, tie your shoes like a Jew! Eat leftover turkey-pastrami from Shabbos meal heated up in a kosher microwave LIKE A JEW! Pray, procreate— everything. The gentile can’t understand it, above all the Christian who has put it all on one man and they can claim to go along for the ride.

Moshiach now.

Yes, I was aware of the various midrashim about David when I wrote that post. Fascinating in their own right. That's why I wondered if it had been considered that David simply had other priorities; i.e. he needed to watch his sheep because the sheep came first. The whole town was focused on Samuel's visit, so good luck finding a baa-baa sitter, much less a competent one.

As for this atonement business, the half shekel for every man (♂) is quite well-prepared do the talking. Like David himself, scandalous, of sketchy provenance:

What If an Israeli National Symbol Is a Fake?

Re Noah and "l'rosh pina"... in that phrase is found the ratio between the volume of the Ark of Noah and the Ark of the Covenant. It's not complicated. Just start with the dimensions of Noah's Ark. It's all in there.

Who's the qualified candidate? HR departments are famous for rejecting the best applications, as only the ones that "check all the boxes" get past their eagle eyes.

So a guy who has, say a semester left before getting the required degree but has 3x the work experience and knowledge base required (having worked while going through school at the top of every class), won't get past the HR gate guards, but the one with the minimum requirements who just graduated at the bottom of his class is interview-worthy.

No concept of the job, or how the requirements are to be properly understood, balanced, and applied. But no use challenging the "due diligence" of the bureaucratic automatons. They're sticklers for the rules lest some unqualified applicant sneak through.

Most people understand this little analogy from the real world, but might become offended at the suggestion that HR should stand for Human Religions.

HR -- why the Messiah is yet to step into the job that will suit his full potential. He's "obviously" not the one anyone wants. Not HR-approved. The benefit, however, is that he's been left alone, like David in the field with his sheep.

But as soon as HR is sent packing, real work can begin and do its good work unimpeded.

As for the knowledge and warning from the expert musicologist... I know that when I want a trustworthy source pattern, I'll rely on a logo design.

Furthermore, Bayer argued, it was unlikely a woman of royalty in seventh-century B.C.E. Jerusalem would wish to publicly associate with a lyre. In those days, she said, a female musician would have been considered a prostitute.

Moshiach now.

Unification:

Year 2891 marks the center of the human timeline as of now, year 5782 (2891 x 2)...

King David

David was the greatest of the kings and the quintessential example of what a Jewish monarch should be. He ruled for 40 years (2884-2924), seven years in Hebron and 33 years in Jerusalem. David conquered Jerusalem in 2891 and made it the capital of the Jewish state, a status it has enjoyed since. Previously, Jerusalem was a non-Jewish Jebusite city.

https://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/2837559/jewish/The-United-Kingdom-of-Israel-and-Its-Split.htm

Relates to the world of action/asiyah because recall that the internal letters of [the sephirah of] Yesod spell the next, the Kingdom of David: Malchut "Do". True enough as-is (action), but if I had to hazard a guess, all that's needed to complete the diagram is a dalet [ד] on the end of "Do" [דו].

Brother can you spare a dalet?

Here's a musical perspective on what's inside a pair of "do"s (1↔8):

Do-Re-Mi-Fa-Sol-La-Si-Do

דו-רה-מי-פה-סול-לה-סי-דו

Re [רה] = 205 (5 x 41)
Mi [מי] = 50
Fa [פה] =
85
Sol [סול] = 96
La [לה] = 35
Si [סי] = 70

= 541

Doe, a deer, a female deer... aka Esther, the hidden star of the show.

Ray, a drop of golden sun...

I almost dinged you for “Si” and not “Ti”...like we all learn in the song in the USA.... Then I looked up the scale in Spanish....Si indeed.

Just remember, the cute little puppy with the red jacket needs to be a descendent of David. You can check his pedigree at:

This is interesting-— But Moshiach himself will be a Torah-observant Jew.

Great! Hop in. Let's go for a little ride! :)

The note names manifest directly from the relevant Hebrew wiki pages, but as for Spanish,

it's just like my coffee mug next to me says,

🔆
Tu
eres
mi
SOL

It's like when Jacob was dubbed Israel for his "Can-Do" spirit,

...for as a prince you have power with God and with men, and have prevailed:

misol: Well, well done, good; "35"

Solresol

Jacob was able to get past HR (it's a miracle), and for that :

ISRAEL, what's in a name? Yesh Rav Aluf for starters. [יש רא"ל]

And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel; for I have seen God face to face, and my nefesh is preserved:

Nefesh: the life blood, the world of action, generation upon generation. There's quite a lineage determined by one little "Y".

There are multi-lingual word plays in the name Charlap. Abraham's God knows how to work it all in.

Jesse had 8 sons but only one was *the* son of Jesse, so the requirements are actually (and ironically) much stricter than any HR dept can use for disqualification purposes.

David had many sons but the royal line continued through SOLomon. And when Solomon spoke [ואמר שלמה], the whole world paid close attention to what Solomon said.

God's enemies (Amalek and Co., the sunshine and oxygen thieves - AM Lo Kadosh) are determined to fight Him with everything they've got, everything they know, yet God has at His disposal everything that they *don't* know. Like the parable of the talents -- one of those sides is never going to run out of ammo, material.

As for the stuff God's got stashed up His sleeve, even a royal cubit, and a funny bone... folks are going to be in for a real treat. Well, anyone with a sense of humor that is. Jewish humor, because there's no competition.

Moshiach himself will be a Torah-observant Jew

The quintessential Can-DO man. Because if he can't DO, he's not a Jew. In fact he's so Torah-observant, he *is* the Law.

The total round up, just as stated in the verses before anyone actually begins to pay attention:

1. And Jacob called to his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the last days:
2. Gather yourselves together, and hear, you sons of Jacob; and listen to Israel your father:

Puniel -- the place where it's always sunnyside up! It's an old theme, even in the list of the seven things created before the world.

The Messiah's name was engraved on a precious stone of the altar of the heavenly Temple, as it is said, His name existed before the sun (Ps. 72:17).

Tree of Souls, pg. 74

(Psalm 118.22. The stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner [לראש פנה])

HR -- I'd feel kind of sorry for them if they weren't so absolutely positively sure of themselves. They've got to keep the dysfunction firmly grounded in place. Job security!

Serach the search lady, the daughter of Happy, knew exactly where the bones of Joseph were located: deep in de Nile. Even in a heavy metal cabinet, aron. :)

Nile [נילוס] = 156 = Yosef [יוסף]

(and Tzion, Ezekiel, Tent of Meeting...)

Torah observance:

Here's an insightful Purim article about order reversals: "what initially is perceived as a cause is really an effect, and what seems to be an effect is really the cause."

It goes a long way in explaining why pork is not kosher and will never be kosher (God's laws never change) and therefore the righteous would never desire it in the first place:

When people begin to rely upon human agents of government (politicians) in order to "get things", it not only breeds corruption, the process destroys living connections, bonds of trust and good will.

That's because the next thing you know, people will use the privacy of voting booths to hire proxies to load up and steal from everybody else, and even feel good about it. It's all for a "good cause", in order to get things for the local community's benefit.

But should the Messiah be caught with a literal freezer full of pork sourced from his own farm, chas v'shalom! That would be a certain cause for his immediate rejection.

The dark side never comprehends the way things operate on the sunny side.
