April 13 - Jesus on Murder: Contrast to the Rabbis - Devotional
GracetoYou.org ^ | 2008 | John MacArthur, Grace Community Church

Posted on 04/13/2022 4:19:00 PM PDT by metmom

“‘You have heard that the ancients were told, “You shall not commit murder” and “Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.” But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court’” (Matthew 5:21–22).

With just two sentences Jesus shatters the rabbinic view of murder, which was so complacently self-righteous. Because of their externalism and legalism, the Jews had an inflated view of themselves. But Jesus destroyed that thinking with the declaration that a person guilty of anger, hatred, cursing, or defamation against another is guilty of murder and worthy of a murderer’s punishment.

All anger, hatred, etc., is incipient murder, as the apostle John writes, “Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer” (1 John 3:15a). By that biblical standard, we are all guilty of murder—after all, who has not hated someone at one time or another?

Not only does Jesus here sweep away the rubbish of the rabbinic, traditional view of murder, His total indictment blasts away any notion of self-justification so common to everyone. The way the Jews thought in Jesus’ time is identical to people’s prevalent thinking today. Even believers can feel proud that they are “not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers” (Luke 18:11)—and we could add “murderers.” Jesus in that parable and in this passage says we are all potentially capable of the worst sins, even murder, because of the sometimes evil attitudes of our hearts.

Not to consider the state of your heart and confess thoughts of anger and hatred, which can lead to taking someone’s life, is not to consider that the Lord can hold you guilty of murder.

Ask Yourself

What benefit is found in knowing that you and I are capable of the most heinous crimes imaginable? Does recognizing this startling piece of information have an effect on your relationship with God and your resultant manner of living?

How ridiculous. Murder is murder, thoughts are thoughts. We pretty much cannot control what thoughts pop into our minds, but we CAN control whether or not we act on the more extreme of those thoughts...like wanting to murder someone who ticks you off enough. Most of us succeed, some do not - and they are the ones who belong in front of a court of law to answer for their ACTUAL crime(s).

Ideally, of course, we wouldn’t have bad thoughts...but that world only exists when we are in Stage 4 REM sleep. Again, we cannot control our thoughts, but we CAN control our actions. If people would work on the latter, rather than the hopeless task of the former, the world would be a far better place.

Which is why hatred is equal to murder by God’s standards.

It’s purely a matter of the level of self-control of the individual whether they will act on the thoughts or not.

And as far as your judgment on the matter, I would hesitate to call something Jesus was so clear on as ridiculous. Sitting in judgment of God’s statements usually doesn’t work out very well.

Young's Literal Translation but I -- I say to you, that every one who is angry at his brother without cause, shall be in danger of the judgment, and whoever may say to his brother, Empty fellow! shall be in danger of the sanhedrim, and whoever may say, Rebel! shall be in danger of the gehenna of the fire.

I would agree, if I viewed him as the Messiah, let alone as “God.” But I don’t.

I do agree that hatred is a bad thing, but impulse hatred is almost impossible to control ( unlike our actions). However, nurturing and feeding a hatred of someone or some group takes one (or many) conscious decisions, and IS worthy of blame. However, I do not think that it is equivalent to the ACT of murder, and I doubt that I ever will.

the rubbish of the rabbinic, traditional view of murder,

So, you are approving that this John McArthur has compared Jewish law to rubbish? He can take his blasphemy and apply it to his nethermost region and then upward.

He’s not comparing the Jewish LAW to rubbish.

It’s the extraneous traditions of men added to the Law that are the rubbish.

So your question is of the *Have you stopped beating your wife yet?* category. It’s based on an assumption of something that is not true.

Nope. The "extraneous traditions" are Torah interpretations which your McArthur boy is NOT qualified to comment on. Still blasphemy from an ignoramus trying to pass themselves off as someone who knows something. They don't.

Have you a replacement for the Messiah - or GOD?

Judging from your previous posts, the question should be "Are YOU 'qualified' to comment about this ignoramus'?" Most of your posts have been inane drivel. And anyone who makes a statement amounting to blasphemy, obviously derived from ignorance, is an ignoramus.

Your posts are ill-researched opinion that you try to state as fact. Most of them are pushing another religion right into the face of others who do not follow that religion, and border on blasphemy. It’s fine that you love your religion, but it’s not OK that you try to present your religion as the only one worth following. And you’re the first to jump in to defend this practice by others as well.

“Have you a replacement for the Messiah - or GOD?”

How can there be a replacement for the Messiah, if the Messiah hasn’t yet come? I am Jewish, and I utterly reject the claim that Jesus was anything other than an ordinary man. He fulfilled NONE of the requirements of being the Messiah:

Was there world peace in the 1st Century? Nope, quite the opposite, especially for Israel.

Did the Jews get ingathered to Israel? Nope, quite the opposite as many left voluntarily during and after the Roman conquest in 70, and many were forcibly removed.

Did he rebuild the Temple? Nope - it was standing already for hundreds of years when he was born, and stood for about 40 after he died.

Was there universal recognition that the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is THE ONE AND ONLY God? Nope, not then and not at any moment since then.

Jesus failed...and even Christians admit that as a matter of faith, insisting that he’ll succeed when he has a do-over (which you call the “Second Coming” - and would actually be the third, since you claim that he came back 3 days after he died...and didn’t accomplish anything then, either).

As for replacing God...the very idea is absurd on its face. God is God - read all about Him in the 5 Books of Moses, in the Prophets, in the Psalms and in the Talmud. I may not be a religious Jew who abides by all of the rituals, but I very strongly believe in ONE God - ONLY one, not 3.

If you are genuinely curious about why Jews utterly reject Jesus, go on YouTube and watch several of the videos that have been produced by Rabbi Tovia Singer. He is an expert in both the Jewish Scriptures and the Christian Scriptures, because such knowledge is necessary to de-program ignorant Jews who have been taken in by missionaries.

This certainly turned into an abrasive thread. It's as if everyone has lost the way, even its origins:

The term yaw was originally applied in sailing, and referred to the motion of an unsteady ship rotating about its vertical axis. Its etymology is uncertain.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aircraft_principal_axes

YAW is the directional axis, so the word makes simple sense when turned completely around, YAW WAY:

1 Sam 16

10. Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel; And Samuel said to Jesse, The Lord has not chosen these:
11. And Samuel said to Jesse, Are here all your children? And he said, There remains still the youngest, and, behold, he keeps the sheep; And Samuel said to Jesse, Send and fetch him; for we will not sit down [nasov, נסב] till he comes here:

Interesting that as spelled here, nasov spelled out = 638,

which is the same sum as the Way of the Patriarchs, derech ha-avot [דרך האבות].
Even as "God brought them out of Egypt" [אל מוציאם ממצרים], Num 23.22
It all starts with the music, so only the best from the best, because Antonio Stradivari [אנטוניו סטרדיווארי] = 638

In all the explanations I've come across for why Jesse's youngest was not present for that all-important line-up, nothing yet about maybe he wasn't available, as in he had other priorities. It must be out there. With all the local excitement about Samuel coming to town, who could he have gotten to watch his sheep? Nobody mindful enough.

It's like what they say about the best king being the one who doesn't want the job, so he's not jockeying for position. Got to guard his sheep, and spend quality time with his beloved harp...
