Since the late 19th Century, Catholics have recited the Prayer to St. Michael when facing disease, disaster and despair.
It proclaims, in part: "St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. … O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls."
Before Vatican II, this prayer was often recited after Mass, although it wasn't in the rubrics. In 1994, St. Pope John Paul II urged Catholics to embrace it – while preaching on threats to the unborn.
Pope Francis delivers his blessing Jan. 2, 2022, at the Vatican.
The faithful at St. Joseph's Parish in Libertyville, Ill., stopped reciting the Prayer to St. Michael aloud after Masses this past summer. While debate continues about what the Archdiocese of Chicago instructed, livestreamed remarks by the associate pastor went viral, during a worship wars surge in modern Catholicism.
"What I'm going to say, I'm going to say this with a lot of respect. Following the directive of Cardinal Cupich, we want to remind everyone that the Prayer of St. Michael is not to be said publicly following Mass," said Father Emanuel Torres-Fuentes. "As a priest, I have to obey, and I obey this at peace."
While Cardinal Blase Cupich's actions have made news, this drama opened in July with a Pope Francis apostolic letter entitled "Traditionis Custodes (Guardians of the tradition)."

Odd, in my parish we just started reciting the prayer to St. Michael a few months ago, at the end of every Mass.
If all the mass attendees start saying it anyway the priest can’t do anything about it. I would get everyone I could to do it. Throw it back in the priest faces.
I attend Mass at 3 different churches during the week.
At my Tues. thru Friday church, I lead the Prayer to St. Michael after the Priest turns from the Alter to return to the Sacristy.
So, its not up to the Priest, as the entire congregation chimes in.
The first time we're told to stop, they will find the Church empty on following days.
This is NOT about me, its about the power of the congregation.
Can you please share the prayer with us?
Thanks
My parish has been doing this for as long as I can recall, the priest leads it. In a former life I used to travel frequently and I liked to attend mass when I could. There were only two places I attended mass that finished with the prayer to St. Michael.
The first was McDill AFB in Tampa, I went to mid day mass several times. They had a big statue of St Michael behind the alter, made my day. The second was at Ft Leavenworth in Kansas for a well attended Sunday mass.
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.
Be thou our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the power of God thrust into hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.
There is also a second part which is not generally recited after Mass:
O glorious prince St. Michael, chief and commander of the heavenly hosts,
guardian of souls, vanquisher of rebel spirits,
servant in the house of the Divine King, and our admirable conductor,
you who shine with excellence and superhuman virtue
deliver us from all evil who turn to you with confidence,
and enable us by your gracious protection
to serve God more and more faithfully every day.
Amen.
If I recall correctly, this was originally promulgated by St. Pius X.
I found the problem:
“... O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits ...”
This makes Francis very nervous.
Sorry, this Pope is a communist. Lines are being drawn in this Church and across the world.
They will find that Christians are not easy to put down — and that Christianity itself cannot be watered down, try as they may. Jesus plays hard.
Oratio ad Sanctum Michael
This is a very helpful website with a collection of prayers in Latin and with translation.
Thank you for sharing that. We sure could use some help from St. Michael. It seems as if there are more evil spirits prowling about the world seeking the ruin of souls than ever before.
Good bishops have been saying the pray to St. Michael the Archangel with their parishes and priests have done likewise.
Chicago is going done the “dwain” hole.
Alter
Don’t you mean “altar?”
Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel
St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits,
who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
We have been praying this version at St. Marie’s in Manchester, NH for as long as I can remember.
He can’t hear the prayers. Only God can
Is that what the snake charmers teach you?
He can hear them if God wills it. You don’t infallible know what God wills, so at best you’re just speculating.
