Why are there more divorces in the Bible Belt?
Episcopal cafe ^ | 26 August 2011 | Andrew Gerns

what fuels the relatively high divorce rate in the “Bible Belt” compared with the relatively secular Northeastern US?

Southern men and women had higher rates of divorce in 2009 than their counterparts in other parts of the country: 10.2 per 1,000 for men and 11.1 per 1,000 for women, according to a new report from the U.S. Census Bureau released Thursday.

By comparison, men and women in the Northeast had the lowest rates of divorce, 7.2 and 7.5 per 1,000, which is also lower than the national divorce rate of 9.2 for men and 9.7 for women.

“In the South, there are higher rates of marriage and higher rates of divorce for men and women,” said Diana Elliott, a family demographer with the U.S. Census Bureau and co-author of the new report. “In the Northeast, you have people who are delaying first marriages, and consequently there are lower rates of marriage and lower rates of divorce.”

..This is not just an exercise in comparative fidelity. There are real social consequences for the high levels of divorce, especially for women and children:

…Divorce still pushes more women into poverty than men and affects their children, since children are still more likely to live with their mothers (75%) than their fathers (25%), according to the same U.S. Census report.

Some other findings:

• Women divorcing in the past year were more likely than men to be in poverty (22% versus 11%).

• Women divorcing in the past year had less household income than their male counterparts. Of those women, 27% had annual household incomes below $25,000, compared with 17% of divorced men.

• Women who divorced in the past year were more likely to receive public assistance than men (23% versus 15%).

• Children living with a parent divorcing in 2009 were more likely to live in poverty (28%) compared with other children (19%) and more likely to live in a rented home (53%) than other children (36%).

This is very interesting. Shouldn’t we have lower divorce rates?

It’s the divorce repeaters that drives up the divorce rates. They just don’t have the maturity to stay married. Consequently, they marry more often.

In the Northeast, you’ll probably find that they just don’t marry as often, which results in less divorce.

Imagine a vehicle traveling a constant 100 mph.

Another traveling 15 mph.

The latter accelerates to 20 mph.

Which has the greater rate of acceleration?

It says the answer in the article.

I’d guess if what’s called serial monogamy among non-married is included there’d be no difference or the south would be lower.

It stands to reason more marriages more divorces

A lot of America’s doesn’t marry anymore

There is a regional racial and money aspect to it

Regions with low marriage rates will have less divorces

These stats are based on overall divorce rates...

Which makes this an agenda driven article

Episcopalians

Protestants least religious denomination next to reformed Lutheran

Asking about divorce is priceless..

In California liberals shack up with 5 ‘partners’ in 4 years... but those breakups don’t count as ‘divorce’...

This has been true a long time. The reason is the Northeast has more Catholics.

When you’re taught that marriage is for life, you tend to hesitate to marry and then hesitate to divorce.

Judicious application of statistics will enable to “prove” anything you want.

In the Northeast, we have lots of people not getting married in the first place.

They don’t let you get a divorce... unless you are married.

that’s what I’d think - more living together and not committing because they’re in cities out of relatives sight, whereas in the South more social and family pressure to marry. Median age 25. By the time Southern Girl is 35, she’s got 10 years of marriage already while Northern Girl is just getting started on her honeymoon years Median age 30.

Idiocracy, here we come!
But seriously, I think that there maybe a pressure to marry the person you’re currently “in love” with, versus in the NE and California, they just shack up.

Why are most American commies spoiled brats of ‘elites’ rather than people who work for a living?

Shouldn’t we have lower divorce rates?

Perhaps we have a higher marriage rate to begin with. The article kinda leaves that out.

Good observation. ...I was pondering the reason why the lowest % was in heavily Dem States. ...Cohabitation in lieu of marriage is likely the answer.
