I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone: for kings and all those in authority that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.

Heavenly Father –

We give thanks to the Lord for giving us the good earth and all good things to enjoy.

Yet, as many pass a celebration of Earth Day with all its political baggage, we have forgotten the God of our fathers, our Lord, our Maker.

As proclaimed in the venite:

During these dark days and our times of trouble, may we look—not to nature or to the schemes of man—but to You, Lord, our mighty Savior.

May we pray for deliverance from the oppression of evil men and women, who hate God. May God’s people have a heart of repentance. May revival ignite as we hold to this promise for a healing of our land—physically, morally, and spiritually:

In Christ, alone, is our healing and our salvation, the only hope to set us free.

The crew of Apollo 8 read from the Book of Genesis as they orbited the Moon. Astronauts Bill Anders, Jim Lovell, and Frank Borman, the first humans to travel to the Moon, recited verses 1 through 10 of the Genesis creation narrative from the King James Bible.[1] Anders read verses 1–4, Lovell verses 5–8, and Borman read verses 9 and 10.

Madalyn Murray O'Hair, founder of American Atheists, responded by suing the United States government, alleging violations of the First Amendment.[6] The suit was filed in the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas. It was submitted to a three-judge panel, which concluded that the case was not a three-judge matter, and dismissed the case for failure to state a cause of action.[7] The direct appeal to the Supreme Court was dismissed for lack of jurisdiction.[8] Another appeal was heard before the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, which affirmed the trial court's dismissal per curiam.[9] The Supreme Court declined to review the case.[10]

The ordeal left NASA skittish about anything relating to religion, leading them to simply self-censor (so basically O’Hair still won). For example, during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, Presbyterian Buzz Aldrin took communion after having landed on the moon, but he didn’t mention it in public for years for fear of another lawsuit. Astronaut Ed Scott, commander of the Apollo 15 mission in 1971, left a copy of the Bible on the dash of the lunar rover which remained on the moon.

Dearest Lord, we join together and celebrate the beauty and intelligence of Your creation. You are an amazing God!

We grieve for those who worship the creation rather than the Creator. Their hearts do not know the joy and peace which comes from knowing the Almighty.

We pray for those who resist You. May their hearts be softened before it is too late.
