Ping

With the Pope’s support (and some would argue pressure) the Italian Bishops’ Conference has therefore decided to change the text to, non abbandonarci alla tentazione, i.e. do not abandon us to temptation.

Why would that start with the Latin Vulgate to determine the correct translation for a document written in Greek. Especially when they have one of the earliest Greek manuscripts which is arguably older than the Vulgate?

I was afraid it was going to be something radical, like:

And lead us not into xenophobia
But deliver us from climate change

“it seems to insinuate that God actually could ‘abandon’ us in temptation which comes close to blasphemy because it puts the blame on God when we abandon him.”

Good point - the change is at best no improvement.

James 1:13 (NIV) indicates that God does not tempt anyone which is implied by “lead us not into temptation” imo.

On the other hand, 2 Timothy 2:14 shows that Paul warned against quarreling over words which Pope Francis is arguably doing.

Also, regardless that Jesus’ apostles knew the Scriptures, they failed to connect prophecy concerning Jesus with events that they had witnessed as they followed Jesus. So understanding the Scriptures is not up to the will of man imo.

In fact, Luke 24:45-46 shows that the risen Jesus opened the apostles’ minds to the Scriptures after the fact.

Paul also explained in 1 Corinthians 1:18 that the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing.

Corrections, insights welcome.

The Word of God stands above the popes. Instead of trying to change God’s Word, this pope should change himself to conform to God’s Word.
