SOUTH BEND, Indiana - To say the least, Father John Jenkins, President of the University of Notre Dame, doesnt seem in denial about the gravity of the clerical sexual abuse scandals that have rocked the Church in recent months.
After the Pennsylvania grand jury report was released in August, Jenkins said the revelations are particularly searing to me and the other priests with me today, whose commitment can seem so tarnished, so soaked in filth, by those who so badly abused it. He pledged the university will do all we can to create a safe, nurturing environment everywhere.
Yet befitting an Oxford-educated philosopher, Jenkins also sees complexity in the abuse crisis, including something few people want to say out loud right now: Theres a tendency, and I dont think its a helpful tendency in this kind of situation, to turn the perpetrators into monsters.
Jenkins was speaking specifically about ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, who was forced to resign from the College of Cardinals in June following credible accusations of abuse.
[The tendency is] just to imagine that they are thoroughly corrupt people, but the problem is that its not true. Its a part of their lives that is deeply problematic, but another part that is not. And thats why its so hard to identify the problem, and sometimes, that person doesnt seem to see the problem, he told Crux in an exclusive interview Nov. 5.

Anything except utter condemnation, is blasphemy. Protecting pedophiles is filth.
IIRC, around 1986 or so, there was an incident with one of the priests out there who died under mysterious circumstances. I believe that the University did not cooperate with authorities.
Reprehensible!
We won’t turn McCarrick into a monster.
He’s already done that himself.
McCarrick did a pretty good job of that, with a little bit of help from sympathetic and like minded clergy.
Not what one would like it to be.
Not what it was in some distant, halcyon past.
What Notre Dam is .
And what it is, is an institution which put on a play glorifying the statutory rape of underage girls by older lesbians.
At Notre Dam, this turned out to be wildly popular.
McCarrick is an apt representative of the faculty, of the student body, and of the alumni.
I cannot believe how low my former church has gone.
I believe strongly that it will be the laity that has to cleanse the church.
And as far as Rome? Save the treasures in the Vatican and incinerate the rest. (The definition of “the rest” should be left to the laity.)
All you need to know about Jenkins is that he invited the vile pro abortionist/crypto homosexual Obama to Notre Dame to give the commencement address and gave him an honorary degree. Since then Notre Dame, ostensibly a Catholic institution has been cursed. It will remain cursed until Jenkins and the current Pope leave.
Isn’t ND the crucifix hiding “catholic” university who invited an “abortion advocating” president to speak?
It doesnt look to me like he needed anyone else to turn him into a monster.
He did it all on his own.

Actually from all I have read McCarrick was not a pedophile. He was a homosexual who preyed on seminarians in their 20s. Some willing. Some coerced. He is more of a Harvey Weinstein than anything else. Weinstein has been called a monster, but never portrayed himself as an apostle of God. McCarrick OTOH is a monster, the esteemed President of the Scool of Our Lady notwithstanding.
Wow—he called it deeply problematic, not just problematic.
Impressive.
Freegards
Wonder how many altar boys’s lives were destroyed by these homosexuals.
I believe you’re referring to Georgetown
Nope. Pedophile. The seminarians stuff is what Vigano wrote about, saying Pope Francis knew. But Francis sacked McCarrick when it came out that McCarrick was also a child raper
When the McCarrick story broke, it involved a minor in NJ (when he was a NY priest - the NY diocese broke that story this summer). The payments for two young men was a separate matter - and probably played no role in his resignation. The latter were known by at least the NJ diocese (where it occurred) paying them, and was hushed up at the time.
Haven’t you seen the photo of “Uncle Ted” in his bathing suit with a minor? That may have been the victim.
Jenkins is an Obama cheerleader and actually had Catholics including three priests, who prayed the Holy Rosary to protest Obama’s presence on the grounds of Notre Dame arrested as they knelt together. Notre Dame means “Our Lady!” so this is the University of Our lady!
Now this slug wants to cover for the perverts that satan sent to TRY to destroy the Catholic Church? Really? Go away you fake.
Yes I remember when Jenkins had Fr. Norm Weston arrested. They dragged that holy old man across the ground in handcuffs. It was enough to make you throw up.
But Weston, now passed on, is surely enjoying is heavenly reward, while Jenkins -— well, let us pray he repents before he has to face the horror.
